    Security Gates Rolleston

A gate that a truck and trailer has to clear is a different piece of engineering from the one on a house frontage, and most enquiries we take for security gates in Rolleston are the first kind. Wider opening, heavier leaf, and a mechanism that will be worked several times a day for years. Group One New Zealand designs, manufactures and installs them, with crews travelling out from Unit 1, 37 Foremans Road in Islington. Sydney Chappell started the New Zealand company in 2026. Phone us on 027 424 0600, 7am to 3pm Monday to Friday, and we will come out and measure the entrance.

How wide does the opening really need to be?

Clear opening width is the first number, and it is not the same as the gap between your existing posts. A unit at iZONE Southern Business Hub taking curtainsiders and trailer units needs the swept path of the longest vehicle that uses it, plus the room a driver actually needs to line up off the road.

That number then decides the gate form. Past a certain width a swing leaf becomes unworkable, because it needs an arc of clear, level ground it usually does not have inside a yard. A slider running on a ground track is the common answer where there is boundary length to park the leaf against. A cantilever slider carries the leaf clear of the ground with no track to fill with grit, which suits a yard surface that is gravel, uneven or under constant truck traffic. Where there is neither arc room nor run-back, a bi-fold folds into itself.

The pedestrian question gets answered at the same time. A separate personnel gate beside the vehicle leaf keeps staff and visitors out of the opening a truck is reversing through, and it means the main gate is not being cycled every time somebody walks in.

    Security Gates Rolleston

Security gate, in the physical sense

The gate on this page is fabricated hardware hung at a property entrance: a yard, a depot, a compound, a driveway. Steel, aluminium or timber, on posts set into the ground, swinging or sliding. It is not a retail security door or shopfront screen, which is a different trade. It is not the release gate a software team runs in a build pipeline, which shares the name and nothing else. Everything described here is made in New Zealand and installed on a Canterbury site by the crew that fabricated it.

A gate that opens forty times a day

Duty cycle changes the specification. A residential gate that moves twice a day and a depot gate that moves forty times are not the same product. Frame section is sized so a wide leaf does not flex as it travels, because flex is what eventually pulls a lock keep out of alignment. Rollers, bearings and hinge detail are chosen for repeated use.

The hardening detail sits on top of that. Infill is welded or mechanically fixed into the frame, not screwed to its face. Hinges carry anti-lift detail so the leaf cannot be raised off its pins, and exposed fixings are tamper-resistant. Drop bolts land in ground sockets on double swing gates, locking points are placed to suit the leaf height, and ground clearance under the leaf is kept tight. Posts are sized and footed for leaf weight and for the ground they stand in. Steel is hot-dip galvanised and then powder coated. Where an anti-climb head is wanted, that is extended vertical bar, a raked top or a rolled edge.

    Solid, palisade, mesh or slats

Rolleston sits inland on the plains, where summer brings hot dry north-westerlies off the Southern Alps and winter brings frequent overnight frosts. A wide solid leaf is a sail in a nor’wester, and every gust it catches loads the hinges, the post and the footing.

That is why a lot of commercial openings here end up with vertical bar, palisade or welded mesh: the wind passes through, and the profile is difficult to climb. Solid sheet and close-boarded timber are the privacy answer, better suited to a sheltered residential frontage than a wide yard entrance. Slatted aluminium sits between the two. Frost and seasonal ground movement work on shallow footings and ground tracks through winter, which is another argument for the cantilever on a site that has to keep operating.

Steel, aluminium, timber and stainless steel

Our range of materials covers wood, steel, aluminium and stainless steel. Steel gives the stiffest frame and takes the widest commercial openings. Aluminium is lighter, so a long leaf works its hinges, rollers and posts less, which matters most on the gates that cycle hardest. It does not rust. Stainless goes into fixings and exposed fittings. Timber suits a house frontage and moves with the seasons, so it is best used as infill on a metal frame rather than as the structure itself.

    Highly Recommend Group 1 Linemarking!

We recently hired Group 1 Linemarking for a few of our residential strata projects, and the results exceeded our expectations. The team was punctual, professional, and clearly experienced. The line marking was crisp, precise, and done exactly to spec. Communication throughout the process was smooth, and they were flexible with scheduling, which made things a lot easier on our end. Selwyn District Council: two metres is the number to remember

Selwyn’s threshold is lower than most of Canterbury. The Council advises that any fence more than 2 metres tall will require a building consent and may require a resource consent, and its consent requirements specifically name fences or walls higher than 2.5 metres, along with all swimming pools and their associated fences. A pool or spa barrier gate is never covered by a general exemption.

There is also a local layer. The Council’s Fencing Guide notes that in Living Z areas and the Lowes Road ODP area in Rolleston, specific fencing rules apply to the sides of properties facing road or reserve boundaries, which is exactly where a street-front gate sits. Where the gate is on a boundary you share with a neighbour, the Fencing Act 1978 covers how that is handled between you. Confirm the current requirement with Selwyn District Council before the job is priced or started.

    Gates on new subdivision frontages

Most of Rolleston’s housing was built between 2010 and 2019, and the town keeps extending through Acland Park and Faringdon. On a new frontage the entrance is often the last thing done, once the driveway is in and the fence line is set. That timing works in your favour: the fall across the opening is known, the services are marked, and the gate can be designed to the finished levels rather than to a plan.

The five things that move a quote

Pricing is on quote. On a yard or depot entrance the inputs stack up roughly in this order:

    • Cycle count. A leaf worked several times an hour is a different specification from one opened twice a day, and on an iZONE tenancy that number is usually the first thing we ask for.
    • Clear opening width, taken from the swept path of the longest vehicle using the entrance rather than from the gap between your existing posts.
    • Gate form and leaf weight. A cantilever carries its leaf off a counterbalance instead of a track, and that changes the frame, the run-back and the footings together.
    • Frame section, infill profile and the locking hardware, including the drop bolts and keeps on a double swing.
    • Post size, footing depth, the yard surface they go into, and the fall across the opening.

Two site facts sit alongside all of that: how much of the yard we can occupy while concrete cures, and whether trucks still have to get through while we work. Then the job runs design, manufacture, installation, every part of it New Zealand made, with a comprehensive warranty and full after-sales service behind the finished gate.

Group One New Zealand, and what happens before the truck leaves

A leaf that swings forty times a day is a fabrication question long before it is an installation one, so most of the thinking happens at Islington: frame section matched to the leaf, hinge and drop-bolt detail chosen for the cycle count, galvanising and powder coat scheduled, tamper-resistant fixings specified. Only then does it go on the truck for the trip out to a yard entrance or a new subdivision frontage in Selwyn. Sydney Chappell founded the New Zealand company in 2026 and it runs with a small team. The decades attached to the group name were earned in Australia, and the company states it that way: “Although Group 1 Line Marking has just started here in New Zealand, as a group we have been operating in Australia for almost 25 years.” Our page carries the range.

Tell us how often it will open

The most useful thing you can tell us at the first call is not the width. It is how many times a day the gate will be worked, and by what. That single number decides the frame, the hardware and how long the whole assembly lasts before anything needs attention.

    Questions Rolleston sites ask

What do security gates cost in Rolleston?

Quoted per site. Opening width, height, frame and infill spec, hardware, ground conditions and finish all move the figure, and a gate cycling all day is specified differently from one that opens twice.

Is a metal gate the right call for a yard entrance?

For anything wide, yes. Steel or aluminium frame, with the infill chosen for how much wind and how much visibility you want through the opening.

Can you build a wooden gate for a house in Faringdon?

Yes. Timber infill on a metal frame gives you the look without the sag that a full timber structure develops on a wide leaf.

Our gate will be 2.1 metres. Is that a problem?

It is over Selwyn’s 2 metre trigger, so plan on a consent conversation. Ask the Council what applies at your address before the design is signed off.
