Count the movements through a processing or transport gateway in a day and the specification writes itself. Group One New Zealand designs, manufactures and installs commercial gates in Darfield, the Canterbury rural service town 35 km west of Christchurch, and marks out and equips the yard behind them. Our crew runs out from Islington in Christchurch, and Sydney Chappell started the New Zealand company in 2026. Phone us on 027 424 0600 or email info@groupone.co.nz, 7am to 3pm Monday to Friday. We come out, look at the site and talk the solution through before anything is quoted or built.
Darfield serves the Malvern district’s arable and pastoral farming country and hosts Fonterra’s milk processing plant, so a good share of the commercial gates around here sit on entrances that heavy vehicles use constantly. Duty cycle, not appearance, is the number that decides everything downstream.
Access control follows the same logic. Keypads, remotes, intercoms, card and fob readers, access controllers and remote locks let regular drivers through without stopping, while a contractor gets a code for the week. Where there is no mains supply at the gate, solar runs it. We also retrofit motors, controllers and hardware to a gate you already own, and our safety devices and alternative opening methods allow automatic gates on sloped ground as well as flat-level.

Once a tanker or a stock truck is through, it still has to turn, back on to a stand, and do it around staff on foot. We mark out and equip that too:
A worked example. A rural transport yard puts a cantilever gate on the truck entrance; the same visit marks a one-way loop that keeps trailers off the staff car park, a walkthrough lane from the parking bays to the office, and a convex mirror where the loop rejoins the exit. One crew, one mobilisation, one set of drawings, and the route from the road through the gate to the stand designed as a single movement. Our vision is to create safer, more efficient parking environments for both drivers and pedestrians.
Span comes first, then side room, leaf weight, duty cycle, and what has to fit through. A cantilever free-spans the opening with no track laid across a heavy-vehicle crossing, which on a tanker route is the point: nothing in the ground to fill with mud, gravel or ice. A sliding gate on a track works where there is side room and the crossing can be kept clean. Single and double swing gates suit lighter traffic with room to arc, a bi-fold suits a tight frontage, and a boom or barrier arm covers a staff car park where the job is managing vehicles rather than securing a yard.
What comes through sets the clear width. A van and a ute with a trailer is one specification. A milk tanker, a stock truck, a container unit or a forklift crossing between sheds is another, and the opening answers to the largest of them.
Our range of materials covers wood, steel, aluminium and stainless steel. Steel carries a wide span without flexing, aluminium keeps a high-cycle leaf light on its rollers, and stainless goes into fixings that need to hold their finish. Steel is hot-dip galvanised before powder coating, so the protection sits inside the sections as well as on them.
Darfield is known as the township under the nor’west arch, hit several days a year by a very dry Foehn wind that can lift the temperature several degrees an hour, with cold southerly blasts off the Southern Ocean in winter. A wide solid leaf standing in that is carrying real load. Post size and footing depth are set for the leaf and the exposure rather than to a standard hole, and a slatted or spaced infill is worth considering on a long span for exactly this reason.
All our gates are 100% New Zealand made and installed by the same team, which is where the saving sits.
Selwyn District Council states that any fence more than 2 metres tall will require a building consent and may require a resource consent, and lists fences or walls higher than 2.5 metres as needing building consent. Most commercial gates are tall enough for the first of those to apply.
The Selwyn District Plan also carries specific urban fencing rules, 4.13 and 4.17, covering height and visibility. A gate on a road boundary is the case most likely to bring a district plan rule into play independently of building consent, and visibility is usually what the rule is protecting. The Council notes that construction and maintenance of boundary fences is generally governed by the Fencing Act 1978 and sits outside its jurisdiction. Our equipment and installations are built to meet local requirements, but confirm the current position with Selwyn District Council before work starts.

The run west is a short one, which matters on a gate that is best assessed while it is actually working rather than after hours. Sydney Chappell founded Group One New Zealand in 2026. It is a small team, so you know you’ll get the very best, and in the company’s own words: “Although Group 1 Line Marking has just started here in New Zealand, as a group we have been operating in Australia for almost 25 years.” All the work is guaranteed, and every gate the team builds carries a comprehensive warranty and a full after-sales service, which on an entrance cycling this hard is the paragraph worth reading twice. The most useful hour to walk a working gateway is the busy one, with tankers or trucks actually moving through it. Tell us when that is and we will time the site visit to it, because a gate assessed on a quiet afternoon gets specified for a quiet afternoon.

There is no useful average, because the same leaf on a quiet lifestyle entrance and on a tanker gateway needs two different motors and two different sets of hardware. The visit is what makes the number honest.
Yes, and it is worth doing. Per-tenant credentials mean a tenant moving out is a five-minute job at the controller rather than a new lock and new keys for everyone.
