    Driveway Gates Kaiapoi

Most people arrive at this decision with three questions: what size, swing or slide, and what will it cost. Group One New Zealand designs, manufactures and installs driveway gates in Kaiapoi, with crews travelling the 19 km up from a base on Foremans Road in Islington, Christchurch, and the answers below are the ones we give at the gate before anyone talks about a design.

Are driveway gates a standard size?

There are standard sizes on a shelf. There is no standard driveway.

Off-the-shelf gates are sold in fixed widths and heights, and they work when your opening happens to land on one of them. What usually happens instead is that the driveway is a little wider or narrower, so the gate is packed out at one end, or the posts get set to suit the gate rather than the entrance.

What we measure at your entrance:

    • The clear opening you actually need, taken between the intended post positions
    • The vehicles that use it: a second car, a ute and trailer, a campervan, a boat, or a horse float on a lifestyle block
    • The fall of the ground across the opening and just inside it
    • How much room sits alongside the driveway for a slider to run back into
    • The height that suits the fence line already there

Height is worth settling early, because it interacts with the consent position further down this page.

Sliding or swing, and which one costs less

Neither type is automatically cheaper. The cost sits in what each one demands from your property.

A swing gate is the simpler build. Two posts, hinges, and a leaf or a pair of leaves. It needs a clear arc inside the boundary the full width of the opening for a single leaf, or half that for each of a pair, on ground level enough to let the leaf travel. Where a Kaiapoi section is compact and the driveway is short, that arc is exactly what you do not have.

A sliding gate needs no arc. It needs a straight, level run alongside the driveway roughly as long as the opening, a track or a cantilever arrangement to carry it, and ground prepared to keep that run true. More groundwork, less air space. On a short frontage, or where the driveway rises away from the road and a swing leaf would climb as it opens, the slider is usually the one that works.

So the cheaper option is whichever one your entrance is already shaped for. Fighting the shape is what adds cost.

Timber, steel or aluminium: what “best” means at your entrance

Our range of materials covers wood, steel, aluminium and stainless steel, and the best gate is the one matched to the span, the exposure and the amount of maintenance you want to do.

Steel carries the widest openings without flex and should be hot-dip galvanised before it is powder-coated, so the protection sits inside the sections as well as on the surface. Aluminium is much lighter, which is easier on hinges, posts and a motor, and it holds its finish with very little work. Timber suits a house it can be matched to and needs a frame that will stay square. Stainless steel goes into fittings that need to keep their finish. Canterbury’s strongest winds come from the north-west, so a solid infill on a wide leaf hands real load to the posts; slatted or spaced infill lets the wind through.

Automating a gate you use twice a day

A commuter household opens the gate on a school-and-work rhythm: out in the morning, in again at the end of the day, plus whoever calls in between. That cycle count and the weight of the leaf are what size the motor.

Power comes from the mains or from solar, and a solar-powered motor saves cutting the driveway to run a cable, which matters on ground that has already been through one rebuild. Access options run from remotes and keypads to Bluetooth or mobile control and SIM-based units that let you open the gate for a delivery while you are at work. Safety devices and alternative opening methods are what allow automatic gates on sloped as well as flat-level ground. If you already have a gate, we supply parts, hardware, access controllers and remote locks, so automating it is often the shorter road.

    Footings, ground and drainage

Kaiapoi’s ground has a history. Large sections of the town were red-zoned after the Canterbury earthquakes and it has rebuilt into largely modern housing, which means a good number of entrances sit on made ground, reinstated services or fill of uncertain age.

That matters more for a gate than for a fence. A gate post carries a moving load every day, so the footing has to hold its position, not just stand up, and on made ground that usually means going deeper or wider than the same gate would need on undisturbed soil. Drainage is the other half of it. The township sits behind the Waimakariri and Kaiapoi River stopbanks, and district projections point to less annual rainfall but more frequent and severe storms, so a post hole that holds water is a problem you live with for years. Where a slider is going in, the track run needs a surface that drains and stays true.

Waimakariri District Council, the road boundary and your neighbour

Waimakariri District Council states that the only occasions it may be involved in fencing are when a building consent or resource consent is required, or where the fence adjoins Council land. Nationally, a building consent is not needed for fences or hoardings up to 2.5 metres high, though district plans commonly require a resource consent above about 2 metres.

For a driveway gate, the Council’s own advice is the line to read twice: a resource consent is likely for any fence on the road boundary or on an internal boundary. A driveway gate is on the road boundary. Pool and spa barriers sit outside the general exemption entirely and carry their own rules, including that the gate cannot be raised so ground clearance exceeds 100 mm. On a shared boundary the Fencing Act 1978 applies, and if your neighbour will not agree you must serve a Fencing Notice and allow 21 days for a response. Confirm the current position with Waimakariri District Council before work starts.

How we build and install it

Design, manufacture and installation. Design happens at your entrance with the tape out. Manufacture is to those measurements, in New Zealand. Installation covers the post holes, the footings, the hanging, the automation and the testing, and the crew does not leave until the gate runs the way it should. All our gates are 100% New Zealand made and installed, with a comprehensive warranty and full after-sales service.

    What sits behind the figure

Pricing is on quote. On a rebuilt Kaiapoi section the input that catches people out is underneath them: a footing bedded into made ground or over reinstated services goes deeper or wider than the same gate would need on undisturbed soil, so part of the job is groundwork before it is ever gate.

Listed roughly in the order they matter at this end of the district:

    • What the post holes are going into, and where the water goes afterwards
    • Opening span, and the configuration a compact frontage will actually take
    • Leaf weight, style and infill
    • Material and finish, galvanising and powder-coat included
    • Motor size against a gate cycling on a commuter rhythm, plus access hardware and safety devices
    • Power at the gate
    • The run up from Islington

Group One New Zealand, and who turns up

A gate opened twice a day on the school-and-commute run is a piece of equipment rather than a purchase, so it matters who put it there. Group One New Zealand is a small New Zealand company. Sydney Chappell founded it in 2026, and the same team designs it, makes it, installs it and comes back under the warranty if it needs attention. Making them ourselves is also where the saving comes from. The years behind the name are Australian, and the company says so itself: “Although Group 1 Line Marking has just started here in New Zealand, as a group we have been operating in Australia for almost 25 years.” The full range is on our page.

The visit settles the things a photograph cannot: what the ground is, where the water goes, how much clear arc or run-back you really have, and where the posts want to sit. Everything else follows from that.

    Other questions Kaiapoi owners ask

How much does a driveway gate cost in New Zealand?

There is no useful national figure, because the same design prices differently on two entrances in the same street. Span, leaf weight, material, finish, ground conditions and automation are what move it, so the measure-up comes before the number.

Can you automate a gate someone else built?

Often, yes. It depends on the leaf weight, whether the frame is still true, whether the posts will take the extra load, and whether power can reach.

Do you cover the rest of the district?

Crews run out of Islington across Canterbury, from Amberley in the north to Timaru in the south, and west to the foothills.
