Group One New Zealand designs, manufactures and installs commercial gates in Christchurch, and sets out the car park and yard on the other side of them. The gate, the traffic lanes, the bollards and the wheel stops come off one drawing and one crew, instead of four trades on four days. We work from Unit 1, 37 Foremans Road in Islington, so a job anywhere in the city is a drive across town, and Sydney Chappell started the New Zealand company in 2026. Phone us on 027 424 0600 or email info@groupone.co.nz, 7am to 3pm Monday to Friday. We come out, look at the site and talk it through before anything is quoted or built.
Think about what a truck does once it clears your gate. It reaches a loading door, turns and backs on to a bay, while somebody walks from a car to reception across the same seal. The gate decides where that route starts. Everything after it is line marking.
We do both, so they can be drawn together:
On a new Christchurch yard, the gate opening, the truck turning circle and the bay layout get resolved together, so nothing is scraped off and redone. On an established site, the call is about the gate and the rest gets looked at while we are there. Our vision is safer, more efficient parking environments for drivers and pedestrians, and a gate alone only solves the first ten metres of that.

Five site facts decide it: clear opening span, side room for a track run, leaf weight, duty cycle, and what has to fit through.
A sliding gate on a track suits a wide opening with a clear run alongside it. A cantilever free-spans the opening with no track across the ground, which is the answer where the entrance is uneven, sloped or crossed by heavy vehicles all day. Single and double swing gates work where there is room to arc and traffic is lighter. A bi-fold folds back into a shallow reveal on a tight frontage. A boom or barrier arm controls vehicles without pretending to be a security barrier, which is often what a staff car park needs.
A van and a ute with a trailer is one specification. A forklift crossing between buildings, a stock truck, a milk tanker or a container unit is another, and each sets a different clear width, ground clearance and motor.
Our range of materials covers wood, steel, aluminium and stainless steel. Weight is the first decision, because it sets the motor and the hardware. Steel carries a wide span without flexing, aluminium keeps a high-cycle gate light on its rollers, and stainless goes into fixings that have to keep their finish. Steel is hot-dip galvanised before powder coating, so the protection sits inside the sections as well as on them.
Then the posts. The nor’wester crosses the plains warm, dry and gusty and can send the city above 30 degrees, and a wide solid leaf is a sail. Post size and footing depth are set for the leaf they carry, not to a standard hole, and the city’s 37 screen frosts and 90 ground frosts a year push those footings deeper again. Where the leaf is genuinely heavy, we can provide larger commercial motors reserved for heavier custom solutions.
All our gates are 100% New Zealand made and installed. The same team manufactures and installs them, which is where the saving sits.
Motors are sized to two numbers: what the leaf weighs, and how many times a day it moves. A gate that opens twice a day is a different unit from one cycling between a warehouse and a yard all shift.
How people get through is the next decision. Keypads, remotes, intercoms, card and fob readers, access controllers and remote locks each do a different job, and most sites run a mix: fobs for staff, a code for the cleaner, an intercom for anyone with neither. Safety devices go on every automated installation, and solar runs the gate where there is no mains supply.
You do not have to start with a new gate. Group One is more than just a gate supply and install service: we also have available parts, hardware, access controllers, remote locks and anything to do with the automation of pre-existing gates, so a sound leaf on sound posts can be automated as it stands. Our safety devices and alternative opening methods allow automatic gates on sloped ground as well as flat-level, and a site that is irregular, tight or hard to reach is a conversation rather than a no.
Christchurch City Council requires a building consent for any fence or hoarding over 2.5 metres, measured as the vertical distance between the top of the fence and the supporting ground directly below. Most commercial gates sit under that, and the rules that catch commercial sites apply whether or not a consent is needed.
A gate on a road boundary is the case most likely to trigger a district plan rule and a resource consent independently of height. Fences within a waterway setback must sit at least 3 metres from the bank, or one-third of the District Plan setback distance, whichever is larger, which is live on industrial land backing on to the city’s streams and drainage channels. A safety barrier is required wherever the fall is 1 metre or more, which turns up on any benched yard. Where the gate meets a shared boundary, your obligations to the neighbour come from the Fencing Act 1978.
Our equipment and installations are built to meet local requirements, but the consent position belongs to the site. Confirm current requirements with the Council before work starts.

Pricing is bespoke, quoted after a site visit. There is no honest figure before someone has stood in the opening. What the visit settles:
We guarantee all the work we do, and every gate the team builds carries a comprehensive warranty and full after-sales service. That covers the leaf and the motor, and it covers the marking, bollards and wheel stops that go in around them. On a city site where the gate is hung during a fit-out and the bays are painted once the seal has cured, it means one company is answerable for both visits rather than each blaming the other’s sequence. Sydney Chappell founded Group One New Zealand in 2026, and we are a small team, so you know you’ll get the very best. In the company’s own words: “Although Group 1 Line Marking has just started here in New Zealand, as a group we have been operating in Australia for almost 25 years.” New Zealand Business Number 9429053752833. Most sites buy an entrance in pieces: a gate from one supplier, marking from another, bollards from a third, a mirror once somebody has had a near miss. It can sit on one order instead. Canterbury added business locations at 2.4% in the year to August 2025, the highest rate in the country, and plenty of them have yet to decide how their traffic runs.

On the day, a light swing leaf on level ground with a basic remote. Over ten years it is only cheapest if your duty cycle is low, because an undersized motor on a busy gate turns into service calls.
