Sketch two solid leaves across a five metre opening and you have drawn a sail. That is the honest starting point for driveway gates in Rangiora, where Canterbury’s strongest winds come from the north-west and Environment Canterbury projects that inland areas north and west of the town could be 15 to 25 percent windier in winter and spring by 2090. Wind, leaf area, and what it changes in the specification
Every square metre of solid infill is surface for the wind to work on, and all of that load runs back through the hinges into the posts and the footings. Four things move with leaf area:
- Infill. Slatted, spaced or perforated infill lets air through and takes the load out of the equation. A solid panel gives privacy and takes the full push.

- Posts and footings. Post section and footing depth follow the leaf they carry. There is no standard hole.
- Split versus single. Two leaves each half the width behave far better in gusts than one long one, and a sliding gate on a track presents its edge to the wind rather than its face.

Steel carries the widest spans without flexing and should be hot-dip galvanised before it is powder-coated. Aluminium is lighter, which reduces the load on the hardware, and it holds a powder-coat finish well. Timber suits older Rangiora houses and needs a frame that stays square. Stainless steel goes into fixings that must not give up before the gate does. Winter southerlies bring hard frosts to the plains, so footings go below the ground movement and the clearance under the leaf is set with a heaved surface in mind.

Rangiora asks this question in more than one form. New developments around the town run stand-alone sections from roughly 330 square metres up to 1,127 square metres, sitting alongside duplexes and townhouses, older heritage houses and rural lifestyle blocks on the fringe. The frontage width changes across all of them, and so does the answer.
On a compact section, the driveway is short and the room inside the boundary is limited, so a swing leaf runs out of arc almost immediately. A sliding gate needs no arc, but it needs a clear run alongside the driveway about as long as the opening itself. On a wider section or a lifestyle block, a double swing pair usually works, and it gives you a wide clear opening for a horse float, a campervan or a contractor’s truck without a single enormous leaf.
Two measurements decide most of it: the span you need between the posts, and what has to drive through it. A ute and trailer needs more clear width than people allow for, particularly if the driveway curves as it leaves the road. Where the driveway rises away from the street, the leaf has to be hung with clearance set at the high point, which is another argument for a slider on level track.
Automation on a gate that takes a hammering
Motor sizing follows two numbers: what the leaf weighs and how often it cycles. A gate used twice a day on a lifestyle block is a different specification from one on a busy household frontage, and wind loading matters here too, since a motor holding a solid leaf against a gust is doing real work.
Power can come from the mains or from solar. Solar suits an entrance well away from the house, saves the trenching and cuts the running cost. For access you have remotes, keypads, Bluetooth or mobile connection, and SIM-based controllers that let you open the gate for someone while you are elsewhere. Safety devices and alternative opening methods allow automatic gates on sloped ground as well as flat-level ground.
If you already have a gate hanging, automating it is often the shorter path. We supply parts, hardware, access controllers and remote locks, and we will tell you honestly whether the existing frame and posts are up to carrying a motor.
Waimakariri District Council, the road boundary and your neighbour
Waimakariri District Council keeps a deliberately light footprint here. It states that the only occasions when the Council may be involved in fencing are when a fence requires a building consent or a resource consent, or where it sits on a boundary adjoining Council land. Nationally, a building consent is not required for fences or hoardings up to 2.5 metres high, which covers most residential gates.
The part that catches driveway gates is separate from consent height. The Council advises that a resource consent is likely for any fence on the road boundary or on an internal boundary, and a driveway gate is on the road boundary by definition. Pool and spa barriers have their own rules and are never covered by the general exemption.
Where the gate meets a shared boundary, the Fencing Act 1978 applies. If your neighbour will not agree to what you propose, you must give them a Fencing Notice before work starts and allow 21 days for a response. Confirm the current requirements with Waimakariri District Council before anything is ordered.

Leaf area, and the rest of the quote
Pricing is on quote only, and on an exposed frontage north of the river the line that moves it furthest is how much solid area you have asked for. A closed panel buys privacy and then charges for it in heavier hinges, a larger post section and a deeper footing, because the load it collects has to end up somewhere. Open the infill and that load comes back out of the specification, and out of the price with it.
Arranged around that decision are the span and the configuration it calls for, the leaf weight you finish with, the material and its finish including galvanising and powder-coating, exposure and ground fall and the driveway surface, the automation and access hardware and safety devices, whether there is power at the post or none at all, and travel to the property. Not one of them can be read off a photograph, which is why nothing is priced before the visit.
