    Industrial Gates Timaru

On a Timaru site the leaf is rarely what fails first. The hinges seize, the rollers roughen, the ground track fills and the fixings bleed rust down the post while the gate itself still looks fine. Group One New Zealand designs, manufactures and installs industrial gates for South Canterbury yards, and specifies them for the air they have to live in. Sydney Chappell founded the New Zealand company in 2026, and crews run down from a base on Foremans Road in Islington, Christchurch, 157 km up the coast. Tell us what the entrance has to carry and we will come and look at it.

Salt reaches the hardware before it reaches the gate

BRANZ notes that sea salt in coastal atmospheres significantly increases the corrosion of metals used in construction. On a port-side yard that shows up in a predictable order: fixings and fasteners, then hinges and rollers, then the ground track, then the motor housing and the access-control pedestal. The frame usually outlives all of it.

Which is why hot-dip galvanised, powder-coated and otherwise corrosion-protected steel is the ordinary specification here rather than an upgrade someone talks you into. The same thinking runs through the parts you cannot see from the road: stainless fixings where a plain bolt would rust from the inside, sealed housings for the motor and controller, and a track detail that sheds grit instead of collecting it. Our range of materials covers wood, steel, aluminium and stainless steel, and on a coastal industrial frontage the finish schedule matters as much as the material.

    Industrial Gates Timaru

    One trip, one list

Timaru is about two hours from the Islington base, so we plan the run rather than dropping in. That shapes how we like to work here: one visit that deals with the whole entrance instead of three separate call-outs.

Group One New Zealand does line marking, bollards, wheel stops, speed humps, convex safety mirrors and safety fencing as well as gates. On a Washdyke or port-side site that means the gate, the marked truck path through it, the pedestrian route kept clear of that path, bollards around the posts and the control pedestal, a convex mirror where the exit sightline is blind, and the fencing carried on along the boundary all get handled by the same crew on the same visit.

    Loading up the trip south

Phone us on 027 424 0600 or email info@groupone.co.nz, 7am to 3pm Monday to Friday.

Give us the site address, the clear opening width, and everything else on the yard you want looked at while we are down. South Canterbury work is scheduled rather than squeezed in, so a longer list makes the trip work harder for you. Odd shape, no room to move in, difficult to get at, or a design already fixed in your mind: all of it is worth saying on that first call.

Which gate the yard will take

Timaru’s industrial work concentrates around the port and Washdyke at the State Highway 8 junction, in meat, dairy, food processing, engineering and logistics. Those yards run heavy vehicles through wide openings, often many times a day, and that narrows the choice quickly.

A sliding gate needs run-back alongside the opening for the full length of the leaf, and its ground track is the part the coastal environment works on hardest. A cantilever gate carries its weight off support posts with nothing running on the ground, which takes that wear point out of the equation on an exposed site. Swing leaves need clear space inside the boundary and catch the wind on a wide solid infill. Bi-fold leaves fold back where the yard has neither. We can provide larger commercial motors for heavier leaves, our gates are solar powered as well, which saves you energy costs, and our range of safety devices and alternative opening methods allows us to have automatic gates on sloped ground as well as flat-level.

Automating what is already on the boundary

If there is a gate on the site now and the posts and leaf are still sound, automating it is generally the cheaper path. We hold parts, hardware, access controllers and remote locks, so a retrofit can bring a motor, safety devices, keypads or fobs and a sensible opening method to a gate that currently gets pushed by hand. On an older coastal yard the retrofit conversation usually starts with the rollers and the track, because that is where the years show.

    Highly Recommend Group 1 Linemarking!

We recently hired Group 1 Linemarking for a few of our residential strata projects, and the results exceeded our expectations. The team was punctual, professional, and clearly experienced. The line marking was crisp, precise, and done exactly to spec. Communication throughout the process was smooth, and they were flexible with scheduling, which made things a lot easier on our end. If you need reliable, high-quality line marking services, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Group 1. Great job!

Two Timaru height rules that do different jobs

Timaru District Council treats fences or walls less than 2.5 metres high as exempt building work. Separately, the Timaru District Plan caps road boundary fences at a maximum height of 2 metres in its residential and related zones.

Those two numbers answer different questions, and that catches people out. A 2.3 metre street-front gate can be exempt from building consent and still breach a District Plan performance standard, which means a land use consent. Check the zoning on your title with the Council before the height is fixed, and we will design to whatever comes back.

    What the quote turns on

Pricing is on quote, and the drivers on a coastal industrial job are these:

    • Clear opening width and the weight of the leaf spanning it
    • Sliding, cantilever, swing or bi-fold, and the civil work at that opening
    • The corrosion protection specified for the frame, the fixings and the hardware
    • Motor size against how often the gate cycles
    • Access control, and how many drivers and staff need to be issued
    • Ground conditions, footings and drainage
    • Power at the gate, or solar
    • New gate, or automation added to one already there

Group One New Zealand, and the service call afterwards

Two hours each way makes after-sales service worth asking about before you order rather than after. All gates constructed by our team come with a comprehensive warranty and are backed by a full after-sales service, and in salt air that is best spent on a planned look at the hardware instead of a rescue. Sydney Chappell founded Group One New Zealand in 2026, and we are a small team, so you know you’ll get the very best. In the company’s own words: “Although Group 1 Line Marking has just started here in New Zealand, as a group we have been operating in Australia for almost 25 years.” Worn marking and a knocked bollard get dealt with on the same trip. More sits on our page. NZBN 9429053752833.

    Before we head south

The trip is worth loading up. Walk the yard once and write down everything that needs attention: the gate, the faded truck path, the corner the trucks keep clipping, the exit where nobody can see the road, the stretch of fence that has given up. Send that list with your address and we will price the lot off one visit rather than four. Group One New Zealand, Unit 1, 37 Foremans Road, Islington, Christchurch 8042.

    What Timaru sites ask

Do you actually come this far south?

Yes. Timaru is the southern end of our service area, which runs from Amberley down to here, and South Canterbury sites are scheduled rather than squeezed in.

What finish holds up nearest the water?

Hot-dip galvanised and powder-coated steel is the sensible default, with stainless where fixings and small hardware are exposed. We go through the schedule on site.

Can you service the gate after it goes in?

Yes. Our gates come with a comprehensive warranty and a full after-sales service, and we would rather plan a visit than react to a stuck gate on a Friday.

What does an industrial gate cost in Timaru?

It is quoted per site, off the list above. Opening width, gate type, corrosion protection and whether it is a new gate or a retrofit move the figure most.
