Three metres between the kerb and the garage door on a new townhouse frontage, or an old opening you would like to stop getting out of the car for: both jobs begin at the gap with a tape measure. Group One New Zealand designs, manufactures and installs custom gates across Christchurch from a base on Foremans Road in Islington, so a city job is a drive across town rather than a trip in from out of the region. Sydney Chappell founded the New Zealand company in 2026. Because we manufacture and install your gates ourselves, there are significant savings to be made. Tell us the opening width and what you want the gate to do, and we will come out and take a look.
The rebuilt central city is now mostly new-build apartments and townhouses rather than standalone homes, and that changes what a gate is being asked to do. On a narrow frontage there is often nowhere for a leaf to swing into, so the answer is a slider running along the boundary or a bi-fold that folds back into the reveal. On a multi-unit development the gate is shared, which means it has to open for several households and their visitors without anyone leaving a remote under a pot plant. Access controllers, keypads and remote locks are part of that conversation, not an afterthought.
If the opening already exists and the posts are sound, automating it is usually the cheaper path. We carry parts, hardware, access controllers, remote locks and anything to do with customisation and the automation of pre-existing gates, so a retrofit does not have to start with pulling out what is already there.
Then there are the sites nobody wants to quote. If your property or commercial site is irregular, tricky, lacking in space, hard to reach or perhaps you have a very specific idea in mind, then we’re happy to talk to you. Essentially, if you can dream it, we can build it.

Our range of materials covers wood, steel, aluminium and stainless steel, and on a Christchurch entrance the choice usually comes down to weight and movement rather than looks alone.
Weight matters because it decides the motor. A long timber leaf on a wide rural-edge driveway asks more of the hardware than a slatted aluminium panel on a townhouse frontage, and we can provide larger commercial motors reserved for larger, heavier gates where the span calls for it.
Movement matters because of the city’s own weather. Christchurch records roughly 37 screen frosts and 90 ground frosts a year, chiefly between April and October, then a nor’wester can arrive warm, dry and gusty and push the temperature above 30°C. A gate that is set with hairline clearances in July will bind in a February nor’wester, and one set loose in the heat will rattle on a frosted morning. Hinge and track clearances get set with that swing in mind, and stainless fixings go where a steel bolt would rust from the inside out.
Our gates are solar powered as well, which saves you energy costs. On a city site with a switchboard twenty metres away that is a preference. Further out, where the entrance sits well away from power, it becomes the practical option.
Pricing is on quote, and there is no honest way to put a figure on a bespoke gate before someone has stood at the opening. What the visit settles:
Automatic gates are not limited to flat, level entrances. Our range of safety devices and alternative opening methods allows us to have on sloped ground as well as flat-level, so a driveway that rises away from the street does not rule out a motor.
We work in three stages, and consultation runs through all of them.
Design starts on your site. We’ll come out and take a look at the site and discuss ideas with you about the best solution for your situation, measure the opening, note the fall and the surface, and check what is available at the gate for power. You approve the design before anything is cut.
Manufacture happens in-house. All our gates are 100% New Zealand made and installed.
Installation is the day the posts go in, the leaf is hung or the track is set, the motor is fitted and the safety devices are commissioned. Before we leave, you open and close it yourself, from the car and from the app or remote you will actually use. All gates constructed by our team come with a comprehensive warranty and are backed by a full after-sales service.
A driveway gate almost always sits on a boundary line, and its posts sit in it. That makes two questions worth answering before the design is fixed.
The first is height. Christchurch City Council requires a building consent for a fence or hoarding over 2.5 metres, measured as the vertical distance between the top of the fence and the supporting ground directly below. On a sloping entrance that measurement is taken at the ground under each point, not at the highest post.
The second is what the leaf may look like. In the Character Area Overlay, the Residential New Neighbourhood Zone and the medium and high density residential zones, lower and/or visually transparent designs are required unless a resource consent is obtained. In practice that pushes an infill toward slats, vertical bars or open panels rather than a solid sheet, which is no bad thing on a windy site. Council also asks for a safety barrier wherever a fall is a metre or more, and keeps fences back from the bank of a stream, river or open drainage channel. Confirm your own zone with the council, and we will design to what it allows.

Islington is the base rather than a stop on a run, which for a city job means the measure-up, the drawing and the installation are all short trips. Bespoke work in Christchurch is mostly tight frontages, shared vehicle access for multi-unit developments, and openings that already exist and now want automation, and none of those forgive a gate ordered to a nominal size. We measure the opening we are actually building for. Sydney Chappell founded Group One New Zealand in 2026 and it is a small team, designing, manufacturing and installing instead of passing the job along. Where the District Plan asks for a lower or visually transparent design, that pushes slatted and open infill ahead of a solid panel, which is a weight decision as much as a look. Frosts through the cooler half of the year set the clearances. On the group’s history, in the company’s own words: “Although Group 1 Line Marking has just started here in New Zealand, as a group we have been operating in Australia for almost 25 years.” The page carries the full range.
Five things make the site visit short and the quote accurate: the clear opening width, the fall or slope across the entrance, what the surface is at the gate, whether power reaches it, and any style or material you already have in mind. Photographs of the entrance help too. None of it is homework, and we will work it out on site if you would rather.

Yes. If the posts and the leaf are sound, we fit the motor, the safety devices and the opening method to what is there. It is one of the more common jobs we take in the city.
If there is no room for a leaf to open into, a slider is usually the answer, provided there is a clear run alongside the opening for it to park in. We check that run on the visit.
Yes. Solar suits an entrance a long way from a switchboard, and it saves you energy costs anywhere.
The base is here in Islington, and the same crews cover Amberley in the north down to Timaru in the south, and west towards the Canterbury foothills.
