    Automatic Gates Kaiapoi

A few millimetres of settlement is nothing to a gate you push by hand. It scrapes, you lift it, life goes on. Put a motor on the same gate and those millimetres cost you its learned limit positions, drag the track and set the safety sensing tripping. That is why our automatic gates in Kaiapoi start with the footings and the ground, not the catalogue. Group One New Zealand designs, manufactures and installs the whole system, with crews travelling the 20 minutes up from the Islington base in Christchurch. Phone us on 027 424 0600, 7am to 3pm Monday to Friday, and we will come out, check the opening and put a written quote in your hand.

What the price is actually made of

There is no honest figure before someone has stood in the opening, and any number offered without that is a guess you will pay for later. What the quote is built from:

    • The span of the opening, and whether it runs as one leaf or two
    • Leaf weight, material and finish
    • The fall and surface of the ground, and what the posts will be founded in
    • Drive type and how many times a day the gate will cycle
    • Whether power comes from the mains or from solar
    • Access control hardware and safety devices
    • Site difficulty and travel to the site

Quotes are in New Zealand dollars and they are written, itemised and given to you after the visit. Nothing on this page is a price list, because a price list for gates is a price list for someone else’s site.

    Automatic Gates Kaiapoi

Ground that has moved, and a gate that has to remember where it is

Large parts of Kaiapoi were red-zoned after the Canterbury earthquakes and the town has rebuilt strongly since, so much of the housing stock is modern and a good deal of it sits on made ground and remediated fill. Differential settlement is a live question here in a way it is not everywhere.

For a powered gate that means four practical things. Post footings go deeper and wider than a fence line would need, sized for the leaf and the drive loads rather than the panel beside it. A sliding gate’s track gets bedded on a base that can carry it without dishing. The drive and the mounting are chosen so the gate can be re-levelled and its limits re-learned without pulling the installation apart. And the first service visit is the one that catches early movement, while it is still an adjustment rather than a rebuild.

Swing or slide on your entrance

Side room and track run decide whether a rack-driven slider is possible. Swing leaves need somewhere to sweep and a driveway that does not drop away underneath them. From there, articulated arm drives suit wide pillars and awkward hinge points, ram drives suit lighter balanced leaves, underground drives keep the hardware out of sight, and rack-driven sliders carry the longest spans and the heaviest cycle counts. The leaf and the drive are specified together every time, because leaf weight, wind area and frame rigidity set the motor class before anything is ordered.

Power, storms and getting in anyway

The town sits behind the Waimakariri and Kaiapoi River stopbanks, and district projections point to fewer millimetres of rain in a year but more frequent and severe storms. Storms mean outages and surges, which are a control board’s two worst days.

So, surge protection on the supply, battery backup sized for a sensible number of cycles, and a manual release that anyone in the household can operate by hand, without tools, in the dark. Where the gate is a long way from any practical mains run, solar operation is a standard option and we size the panel and battery against the gate’s real cycle count rather than a nominal rating. Standby draw is the number that matters there, not the draw while it is moving.

    How you will open it

Remote handsets and a keypad cover most households. An intercom suits a gate out of sight of the house and wants cable back to the building unless it runs over a mobile connection. Bluetooth and mobile phone access work for a fixed group of regular users. SIM-based access lets you open the gate remotely and hand a courier, a tradesperson or a visitor temporary access without giving away a remote, provided the mobile signal at the gate is usable. Free-exit detection lets vehicles leave without touching anything, which is what the light-industrial units around town ask for first.

    Highly Recommend Group 1 Linemarking!

We recently hired Group 1 Linemarking for a few of our residential strata projects, and the results exceeded our expectations. The team was punctual, professional, and clearly experienced. The line marking was crisp, precise, and done exactly to spec. Communication throughout the process was smooth, and they were flexible with scheduling, which made things a lot easier on our end. If you need reliable, high-quality line marking services, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Group 1. Great job!

    Safety devices and difficult entrances

Obstruction detection and force limiting are standard, with photocells across the opening, a safety edge on the leading edge, warning lights where the gate meets a footpath, a pedestrian route separate from the vehicles and detection loops where a queue could back onto the street.

Awkward is normal. Cramped frontages, irregular openings, shared driveways and ground that slopes across the entrance are all design problems we solve on site rather than reasons to decline the job. If you already have a gate on sound posts, we can often automate it with parts, hardware, access controllers and remote locks fitted to what is there, once we have checked the frame is rigid enough to be driven and the posts have not shifted.

The gate itself, built to carry its drive

We design, manufacture and install, with consultation running through all three stages. Timber, steel, aluminium and stainless steel, hot-dip galvanised and powder coated where the material calls for it, fabricated in our own workshop rather than bought in and fitted. A leaf that flexes throws a powered gate out of alignment long before a hand-pushed one complains, so rigidity is drawn in as an automation requirement from the start. Every gate is 100% New Zealand made and installed and carries a comprehensive warranty and full after-sales service.

Pool gates, boundaries and Waimakariri District Council

If the gate is part of a pool or spa barrier, one rule matters more than any height figure: the gate must not be able to be raised so that ground clearance exceeds 100 mm. Pool barriers sit outside the general fencing exemption entirely, so they are a consent job in their own right.

For everything else, a building consent is not required nationally for fences or hoardings up to 2.5 metres, though a district plan can trigger a resource consent above about 2 metres regardless. Waimakariri District Council becomes involved only where a consent is needed or the fence adjoins Council land, and it advises that a resource consent is likely for a fence on a road boundary, which is where a driveway gate lives. A shared boundary fence falls under the Fencing Act 1978, with a Fencing Notice served on the neighbour and 21 days to respond. Confirm current requirements with Waimakariri District Council before work starts.

Group One New Zealand, and the frame that has to stay square

Ground that has been remediated moves, and a powered gate is far less forgiving of movement than a hand-pushed one. That is a fabrication problem before it is an automation problem, which is the argument for making our own frames: section chosen for rigidity across the span, posts specified for the drive load rather than for the weight of the leaf alone, and a track bed that can be shimmed and relearned if the ground settles again. Sydney Chappell founded Group One New Zealand in 2026 and it stays a small team. Gates are built at Islington in Christchurch and brought over the Waimakariri finished. On a compact industrial unit or a rebuilt residential frontage that is two trips, measure and install, which keeps a modest opening worth doing properly. The history attached to the group name is Australian, quoted as the company puts it: “Although Group 1 Line Marking has just started here in New Zealand, as a group we have been operating in Australia for almost 25 years.” The page lists what we build.

    What the site visit settles

We come to you, and in about half an hour on site we can tell you which gate type the opening supports, what the posts have to be founded in, whether mains or solar makes more sense from where the power actually is, whether a mobile-based control will get a signal at the gate, and what consent question the gate raises. Everything after that is detail. Book the visit, then decide.

    Before you decide

How much does an automatic gate cost in New Zealand?

Per site, always. The drivers listed above are what move it, and the quote arrives in writing after the visit.

    How long does installation take?

Fabrication and installation are scheduled once the design is signed off. The site visit is where we tell you the timeframe for your gate, because a retrofit to existing posts and a new gate with new footings are different jobs.

Can I automate the gate I already have?

Often, yes, and it is the cheaper path when the leaf and posts are up to it. We will tell you straight if they are not.

What happens if the gate stops closing properly after a year?

Usually it is alignment, and usually it is adjustable. That is what the after-sales service is for, and it is why we build in the ability to re-level and re-learn limits.
