    Line Marking Timaru

Your yard takes truck and trailer units all day and the bay lines gave up a couple of winters back. Heavy-vehicle hardstand, plant floors and port-side yards make up most of our line marking work in Timaru. Group One New Zealand brings crews down from Islington in Christchurch, 157 km along the coast, and Sydney Chappell founded the New Zealand company in 2026. Tell us the site address, the surface and roughly what area needs marking, and we will come and take a look. The phone is answered 7am to 3pm on weekdays.

    Yards, hardstand and plant floors

Timaru is the industry hub for South Canterbury. PrimePort moves around $1.1 billion in exports a year, and meat, dairy and food processing plants sit alongside engineering and logistics operators around the port and out at Washdyke. That skews the work here away from tidy office car parks and towards surfaces that carry weight.

What we mark on those sites:

    • Truck and trailer bays, turning paths and hardstand traffic routes
    • Loading docks, staging areas and no-parking zones
    • Factory and warehouse floor zoning, forklift lanes and pedestrian walkways
    • Hatching, directional arrows, stencils and bay numbering
    • Car park bays, aisles and disabled bays for staff and visitor areas
    • Removal or covering of worn lines before a fresh layout

Marking a floor inside an operating plant is a different exercise from marking a car park. Wash-down, food-safe zoning, pallet traffic and the shift pattern all shape where lines can go and when they can be laid, so we design around them rather than working to a template.

Getting a number for the job

Every job is priced after we have seen it. There is no rate card, because two yards of the same size can be a week apart in work. Once we have walked the site, the quote is built from:

    • The area to be marked and the number of bays, lanes or zones in the layout
    • The state of the surface and the preparation it needs
    • Whether old paint has to come off or be covered
    • How complex the layout is, including arrows, hatching, stencils and numbering
    • Access, and the window we get before traffic comes back

Access is usually the biggest single mover on an industrial site. A yard we can have between shifts prices differently from one marked in strips around trucks that keep arriving.

How the job runs on the day

Design, manufacture and installation are the three stages, and you stay in the conversation through all of them.

Design happens on your site. We measure, note the falls and the surface, and set out a layout around the vehicles you actually run, including the largest one that has to turn in there. Manufacture covers the stencils, numbering and custom markings for that layout. Installation is preparation first, then removal or covering of the old lines, then application. Before we leave, the crew tells you how long to stay off it.

Salt air, wind, and how long markings last

Timaru sits exposed on the coast. Summers are comfortable, winters are short, cold and windy, and moderate coastal winds run through the year. Wind is the day-to-day constraint on us: it lifts overspray and skins paint before it settles, so a still window matters more here than a warm one.

Salt is the longer-term one. BRANZ notes that sea salt in coastal atmospheres significantly increases corrosion of metals used in construction. That does not attack paint on a slab, but it does decide what you put beside it. Where a layout includes bollards, wheel stops or posts, specify them hot-dip galvanised or powder-coated. Steel that rusts out beside a fresh line makes the whole bay look neglected within a couple of seasons.

Traffic zones, safety and the council

If forklifts and people share a floor, or trucks reverse across a route staff walk, the markings are part of how the site meets its health and safety duties. Walkthrough lanes, forklift paths and clearly zoned storage are cheap controls, and they help in minimising work-related accidents.

Street signs and markings on the public road network are managed by Timaru District Council, so anything in the road corridor or across a vehicle crossing goes to them first. Inside the gate, the layout is your call and we mark to it.

    Line Marking Timaru

Group One New Zealand at your gate

A drive of 157 km down the coast means a job here goes in the diary as a block of time rather than an hour squeezed between two others, which happens to suit a plant that can only hand its floor over between shifts. Group One New Zealand is a small team based at Islington in Christchurch, founded in 2026 by Sydney Chappell, and everything we use is current line marking equipment and environmentally safe product. As the company puts it: “Although Group 1 Line Marking has just started here in New Zealand, as a group we have been operating in Australia for almost 25 years.” There is more detail on our page.

    Questions from South Canterbury sites

Do you come as far south as Timaru?

Yes. Timaru is the southern end of our service area, which runs up to Amberley in the north. It is about two hours from the Islington base, so a site visit is booked in advance rather than squeezed in the same morning.

Do you cover Washdyke and the port as well as central Timaru?

Yes, and most of the Timaru enquiries we take are from those two areas rather than the town centre.

Will the salt air shorten the life of the markings?

Paint on a sealed or concrete surface is not the vulnerable part. Any steelwork in the layout is, which is why we recommend galvanised or powder-coated wheel stops and bollards on coastal sites.

Can you work around a plant that runs shifts?

Usually. Tell us the shift pattern and which areas can be handed over together, and the layout is staged so production keeps moving.

Can you paint edge lines or markings on the street outside?

That is council roading territory. Talk to Timaru District Council about the road corridor, and we will handle everything inside your boundary.

What does line marking cost in Timaru?

It is quoted per site after a visit. Area, surface, preparation, layout complexity and access all move the figure.
