A slider that needs a shoulder against it before it will close, or a swing leaf a driver climbs down to drag open twice a shift: on an established Christchurch yard the gate is usually already there. Group One New Zealand designs, manufactures and installs industrial gates across Christchurch, and automates and re-controls the ones already standing. Sydney Chappell founded the New Zealand company in 2026, and the crews work from a base on Foremans Road in Islington, so a city site is a short run across town rather than a trip in from out of the region. Tell us the opening width and what goes through it, and we will come out and look at the gateway.
Most sites here are not starting from an empty boundary. The rebuilt central city filled with new apartments and townhouses, while the working sites sit out on the older industrial estates ringing it, and plenty of those gates have been swinging or sliding since before the yard changed hands. So the first question is rarely which gate to buy. It is whether the one out there can be automated, controlled and made safer. We hold parts, hardware, access controllers and remote locks, and automating a pre-existing gate is a service in its own right here.
On a retrofit visit we look at what the existing gate will support:
Sometimes the honest answer is that the posts have had it and a new gate costs less than propping up the old one. You will get that answer on the day rather than after the invoice.

A gate is one element of how vehicles and people move through your site, and it fails on the things around it as often as on the leaf itself.
Think about the approach first. If a truck cannot pull fully clear of the road while the gate opens, the gate has created a hazard on the street rather than solved one at the boundary. Stacking space, the entry angle and where the driver stops to badge in get worked out at the same visit.
Then the ground. Group One New Zealand does line marking, bollards, wheel stops, speed humps, convex safety mirrors and safety fencing as well as gates, so the truck path through the gateway can be marked, the pedestrian route separated from it, the posts and motor housing shielded by bollards or wheel stops, a convex mirror set where the exit sightline is blind, and the fencing carried on along the boundary. One visit, one team, one layout.
Our service includes the design and implementation of walkthrough lanes, forklift paths, and specific zones for storage, which help in minimising work-related accidents and improving logistical operations.

A city job is a short run, so a look at the gateway is easy to arrange and worth having before anything is priced. Useful on the call: the site address, the clear opening width, roughly how many vehicle movements a day go through it, and whether there is power at the gate. On an established estate that movement count carries more weight than owners expect, because it is what separates a gate that wants a motor from a gate that has finished.
A narrow frontage, an awkward angle off the street, or a look you have already settled on with a designer are all workable, and all of them are quicker to sort out standing at the opening than described over a phone.
Gate type follows the site. Four questions settle it: how wide the clear opening has to be, what space there is beside or behind it, what the ground does, and how many times a day it will cycle.
A sliding gate runs on a track and needs a clear run-back alongside the opening for the full length of the leaf. Where the ground is uneven, silts up or floods, a cantilever gate carries its own weight off support posts and never touches the ground across the opening. A swing leaf wants clear space inside the boundary to open into, and a wide solid infill will catch the nor’wester on an exposed frontage. Bi-fold leaves fold back into the reveal where there is room for neither.
Our range of materials covers wood, steel, aluminium and stainless steel, and the choice comes down to leaf weight, the infill you need for visibility, and what the finish has to survive. Our gates are solar powered as well, which saves you energy costs, and solar is the practical answer wherever the gate sits well away from a switchboard.
Pricing is on quote. Questions about what an automated, motorised or driveway gate costs all resolve into the same handful of drivers, and none of them can be read off a size chart:
The last one moves the number most, which is why we look before we quote rather than after.

Christchurch City Council requires a building consent for a fence or hoarding over 2.5 metres, measured as the vertical distance between the top of the fence and the supporting ground directly below. On a yard with a fall across the frontage that measurement is taken at the ground under each point, not at the tallest post.
Two other Council positions catch industrial sites out. In the Character Area Overlay, the Residential New Neighbourhood Zone and the medium and high density residential zones, lower and visually transparent designs are required unless a resource consent is obtained, which matters where a yard backs onto residential land. And where a boundary runs beside a stream, river or open drainage channel, the fence must sit at least 3 metres from the bank, or one third of the District Plan waterway setback, whichever is larger. Confirm your own zone with the Council, and we will design to what it allows.
Foremans Road in Islington is an industrial street much like the ones these gates stand on, and it is where the crews and the gear leave from each morning. Sydney Chappell founded Group One New Zealand in 2026, and we are a small team, so you know you’ll get the very best. In the company’s own words: “Although Group 1 Line Marking has just started here in New Zealand, as a group we have been operating in Australia for almost 25 years.” Being in the city means an assessment of a tired gate does not have to wait for a scheduled run out of the region, and it means the marking, bollards and fencing around that gate can follow on a second visit once the yard suits it. All gates constructed by our team come with a comprehensive warranty and are backed by a full after-sales service. The full range sits on our page. NZBN 9429053752833.

That is the one question worth answering before anything else, and it takes a walk around the gateway rather than a phone call. We will look at the posts, the track and the leaf, tell you plainly whether automation is money well spent or money spent twice, and quote whichever way it falls. We manufacture and install your gates ourselves, which is where the savings are. All our gates are 100% New Zealand made and installed.
Access controllers and remote locks, sized to the number of users and how you want them issued and revoked. We go through the options on site.
