A gate that strangers open
North Canterbury’s population centre carries 7,458 businesses across the Waimakariri district in 2025, and a lot of them are contractor and trade yards holding plant and materials, or commercial frontages where customers, suppliers and staff share one entrance from opening to close.
That changes the safety specification, not just the lock. Three things are worth getting right on a high-cycle public-facing gate:
- A separate pedestrian gate, run on its own hardware, so nobody on foot is ever walking through a moving vehicle gate
- Safety devices and photo-eyes sized to the opening, because a leaf that cycles a hundred times a day meets a customer at some point
- Sight lines, so a driver waiting at the gate can see the footpath and the footpath can see them
Access control does the rest. Keypads, remotes, intercoms, card and fob readers, access controllers and remote locks let you give staff permanent access, a supplier a delivery window outside trading hours, and a visitor an intercom rather than a key. Motors are sized to leaf weight and to how many times a day the gate moves, and on a trade yard that number is the specification. Solar runs a gate where mains power has not reached the post. We also retrofit motors, controllers and hardware to a gate you already own, and our safety devices and alternative opening methods allow automatic gates on sloped ground as well as flat-level.

The gate is one element of the commercial site we work on, and on a frontage the public uses, the marking behind it does as much for safety as the leaf itself:
- Car park bays, aisles, arrows and hatching for customers and staff
- Internal traffic lanes, walkthrough lanes and forklift paths through the yard
- Designated storage and loading zones so stock stops landing in the turning space
- Bollards protecting switchboards, door jambs, display stock and the shop front
- Wheel stops, speed humps and convex safety mirrors where the yard exit meets the footpath
- Safety and palisade fencing carrying the boundary into the gate posts
A worked example. A building supplies yard puts a sliding gate on the truck entrance, and the same visit marks a customer route that never crosses the forklift path, sets a walkthrough lane from the visitor bays to the trade counter, puts bollards on the timber racks nearest the aisle and a convex mirror where the loading area comes out blind onto the customer car park. One crew, one mobilisation, one set of drawings. What a busy frontage takes
Span first, then side room for a track run, leaf weight, duty cycle, and what has to fit through. A sliding gate on a track suits a wide frontage where there is a clear run alongside and no room for a leaf to arc over a footpath. A cantilever free-spans the opening with nothing crossing the ground, which suits a yard entrance forklifts run over all day. Single and double swing gates need arc room and lighter traffic. A bi-fold folds back into a shallow reveal where the frontage is tight. A boom or barrier arm suits a customer car park where the job is managing vehicles rather than securing stock.
Vehicles set the clear width: a van and a ute with a trailer is one specification, a forklift crossing between buildings, a stock truck or a container unit is another.
Leaf area, infill and a windier winter
Our range of materials covers wood, steel, aluminium and stainless steel. Steel holds a wide span without flex, aluminium keeps a fast-cycling leaf light on its rollers and hinges, and stainless goes into fixings that have to hold their finish. Steel is hot-dip galvanised and then powder coated, and larger commercial motors are available where a custom leaf is heavy.
Wind is a specification constraint here rather than a headline. The strongest winds are north-westerlies, winter southerlies bring hard frosts to the plains, and Environment Canterbury projects inland areas north and west of Rangiora becoming 15 to 25% windier in winter and spring by 2090. On a large commercial gate that drives infill spacing, total leaf area, and hinge and post specification. A slatted or spaced infill lets the wind through; a solid one hands the whole load to the posts, so post size and footing depth are set for the leaf they actually carry.

Where Waimakariri District Council comes in
The Council’s position is hands-off with two exceptions. It becomes involved in fencing only where a building consent or resource consent is needed, or where the fence adjoins Council land, and it advises that a resource consent is likely for any fence on a road boundary or an internal boundary. A commercial gate on a trade or retail frontage is a road boundary structure by definition, so that is the case to check first.
Nationally, a building consent is not required for fences or hoardings up to 2.5 metres. Boundary fences remain subject to the Fencing Act 1978, which requires a neighbour to be served a fencing notice and given 21 days to respond before work begins. Our equipment and installations are built to meet local requirements, but confirm the current requirements with Waimakariri District Council before work starts.

What trade yards and frontages ask
Do we need a separate gate for people on foot?
On any frontage the public uses, yes, and it is the cheapest safety decision on the job. A pedestrian gate on its own hardware keeps people out of the vehicle opening entirely.
Can suppliers get in after we close?
Yes. A code or a fob issued to a supplier with the hours you choose is a standard part of the access controller, and it can be changed without anybody coming back out.
How much should we budget for a frontage gate?
