A hand-pushed gate meets the wind once, when you are holding it. A powered gate meets it every cycle, and it has no judgement. A gust hitting a swing leaf mid-travel loads the drive in the direction it is not pulling, which is the case a motor handles worst. Force limiting and obstruction detection then read that resistance as something in the way and stop, or reverse, so the gate nuisance-trips on exactly the days you least want to get out of the car.
A leaf parked open in a north-westerly is a sail on a hinge, and the hold-open hardware is what stops it. From there the specification follows the opening. Span and leaf weight set the drive class. Track run and side room decide whether a rack-driven slider is possible, and a slider is often the better answer on an exposed entrance because it presents its edge to the wind through most of its travel rather than its face. Swing gates need sweep clearance and a driveway that does not fall away underneath them. Articulated arm drives suit wide pillars and awkward hinge points, ram drives suit lighter balanced leaves, and underground drives hide the hardware where the entrance matters visually.
Motor and gearbox are then sized with headroom above the still-air calculation, and the locking or hold-open arrangement is chosen to hold the leaf where it is parked. Cycles per day come into it too: a lifestyle block gate opening four times a day and a commercial entrance running all day take different duty ratings from the same catalogue.
Mains supply means a trench along the gate line, conduit and an outdoor controller enclosure. On a rural lifestyle block where the gate sits well away from the house, that run gets expensive, and solar operation is the practical answer. Remote handsets and keypads cover most household entrances. An intercom suits a gate you cannot see from the house, and it needs cable back to the building unless it runs over a mobile connection. Bluetooth and mobile phone access work for a fixed set of regular users. SIM-based controllers let you open the gate from anywhere and hand temporary access to a courier, a contractor or a stock agent, as long as there is a usable mobile signal at the gate. Obstruction detection and force limiting are the baseline, with photocells across the opening, a safety edge on the leading edge, warning lights where the gate crosses a footpath or a busy frontage, a pedestrian route separate from the vehicle gate, and vehicle detection where a queue could back onto the road.

Waimakariri District Council keeps a deliberately light touch on fencing. It becomes involved only where a fence needs a building consent or a resource consent, or where the fence adjoins Council land. The Council also advises that a resource consent is likely for any fence on a road boundary or an internal boundary, which is precisely where an automatic gate goes.
Nationally, a building consent is not required for fences or hoardings up to 2.5 metres high, and pool and spa barriers sit outside that exemption entirely. Because we draw and build the gate ourselves, leaf area and infill spacing are ours to choose, and on an exposed North Canterbury frontage those two choices matter more than the badge on the motor. Sometimes it is. A wide solid swing leaf on a fully exposed frontage, opening onto a driveway with nowhere safe to park it, is a gate that will fight its motor for its whole life. On that entrance the honest answer is a different gate type, a different opening position, or a spaced infill you may not have pictured. We would rather tell you that at the site visit than warrant our way through it afterwards.

Not at all, but a solid timber leaf catches far more wind than a spaced one. We use timber regularly and design the infill and the frame around the exposure the entrance actually has.
It should not. Nuisance stopping is usually a force-limit setting fighting a leaf that catches too much wind, so it gets solved in the leaf design and the drive sizing rather than by turning the safety sensing down.
