Deciding between a swing and a slider is where nearly every gate conversation in this town lands, and it usually comes down to what sits in the first few metres behind the opening. New frontages, known levels, and where the gate can go
Large sections of Kaiapoi were red-zoned after the Canterbury earthquakes, and the town rebuilt strongly, so a lot of the housing here is modern. That changes the job in a useful way. On an older property the gate has to negotiate with a post line and a driveway that have both moved over forty years. On a recently finished frontage, the levels are known, the drive is true, and the landscaping is either in or still being planned, which means the gate can be set where it belongs rather than where the old one happened to be.
It also means the finish matters. A gate going onto new landscaping is a visible piece of the property, not a repair, and the infill, the powder-coat colour and the post detailing get chosen accordingly.

The commercial side of Kaiapoi runs to industrial units of roughly 70 to 400 square metres, with retail frontages and offices attached. The gate brief there is small and precise rather than grand: a narrow yard entrance between two buildings, a service lane behind a shop, a fenced compound for plant and stock. Sliders and compact security gates do most of that work, because there is no room ahead of the opening for a leaf to swing into and no appetite for a gate that blocks a delivery while it opens.
Access control belongs in that conversation too. We supply access controllers, remote locks, keypads and the hardware that goes with automating a pre-existing gate, so staff, contractors and after-hours deliveries can all be handled without cutting keys.
Some entrances are simply awkward. If your property or commercial site is irregular, tricky, lacking in space, hard to reach or perhaps you have a very specific idea in mind, then we’re happy to talk to you. Essentially, if you can dream it, we can build it.
Material, wind and hardware that has to cope
Our range of materials covers wood, steel, aluminium and stainless steel. Canterbury’s strongest winds come from the north-west, and district projections point to fewer millimetres of rain over the year but more frequent and severe storms. A gate is a big flat object bolted to two posts, so that combination argues for slatted or open infill over a solid panel on an exposed frontage, and for footings and hinges sized for gust loading rather than for the leaf’s dead weight alone.
Where the entrance sits low behind the stopbanks, we keep the bottom rail clear of standing water and put stainless where a fixing would otherwise sit damp.
Automation, power and solar
Leaf weight decides the motor. A light aluminium slider and a heavy timber double swing are different machines, and we can provide larger commercial motors reserved for larger, heavier gates where the span calls for it.
Our gates are solar powered as well, which saves you energy costs, and on a yard entrance or a rear boundary where the switchboard is a long way off, solar is often what makes automation affordable at all. Slope is not a barrier either: our range of safety devices and alternative opening methods allows us to have on sloped ground as well as flat-level.

Bespoke gates are priced on quote, after someone has stood at the opening. The variables:

How the job runs from the first visit
We’ll come out and take a look at the site and discuss ideas with you about the best solution for your situation. The visit produces the measurements and the design; nothing is fabricated until you have approved it.
Then it is made. All our gates are 100% New Zealand made and installed. Installation covers the posts, the leaf or the track, the motor and the safety devices, finishing with commissioning while you work the gate yourself. All gates constructed by our team come with a comprehensive warranty and are backed by a full after-sales service.
Have this ready for the visit if you can: the clear opening width, whether the entrance falls or slopes, the surface at the gate, whether power reaches it, and the style and material you are leaning towards.
Consents, boundaries and the neighbour’s 21 days
Waimakariri District Council becomes involved in fencing where a building or resource consent is required, or where the fence adjoins Council land, and notes that a resource consent is likely for any fence on the road boundary or on an internal boundary. A driveway gate sits on the road boundary by definition, so that is worth a call to the Council before the design is fixed. Nationally, a building consent is not required for fences or hoardings up to 2.5 metres high, though district plans commonly trigger a resource consent above about 2 metres.
Pool barriers are excluded from that exemption and have their own rules. The one that catches gate design directly: the gate must not be able to be raised so that ground clearance exceeds 100 mm. We build pool gates to that from the start rather than adjusting them afterwards.
If the gate forms part of a boundary fence, the Fencing Act 1978 applies as well, and your neighbour must be served a Fencing Notice and given 21 days to respond before work begins.

Group One New Zealand, and a gate for a finished frontage
Most openings here are recent. The landscaping is in, the levels are known and the gate is the last thing to arrive, so it has to suit what is already there rather than the other way round. That is bespoke work, and the drawing, the fabrication and the installation are all ours. Group One New Zealand has been trading since 2026 under founder Sydney Chappell and runs with a small team out of Islington in Christchurch, twenty minutes and a river away. On the commercial side the yard entrances are compact, so a slider or a security gate gets built to a real measurement instead of a standard size that nearly fits. Where a gate forms part of a pool barrier, the Waimakariri clearance detail is designed in rather than discovered at inspection. Which one is yours?
Two rules settle most of it. If there is no clear space behind the opening for a leaf to swing into, or the drive rises steeply away from the road, it is a slider. If there is room and you want the look of two leaves meeting in the middle, it is a double swing, and the motor is sized to whatever material you have chosen. Everything after that, the infill, the finish, the keypad, the remotes, is preference rather than physics.

What does a custom gate cost?
It is quoted per gate, after the measure-up. Span, material, leaf weight, motor size, power supply and ground conditions all move the figure, so a number given before the visit would not hold.
Can you automate the gate we already have?
Often, yes. If the posts and the leaf are sound we fit the motor, safety devices and opening method to what is there, and supply the controllers and remote locks with it.

Yes. Pool barrier gates have their own requirements, including the 100 mm ground clearance limit, and they are designed to those rules rather than adapted to them.
