Who holds a credential, and who takes it back

What you can put on the gate
What is being controlled decides half of it: a driveway, a shared yard entrance, a fenced compound, a rural gateway. Who needs in decides the rest.
- Keypad or PIN entry, with a separate code per person or per tenancy
- Remote transmitters, handheld or mounted in a vehicle
- Bluetooth and mobile-phone entry, using the phone the driver already carries
- SIM-based remote access, so a call or a text opens the gate from off site
- Access controllers, holding the user list and deciding what each credential opens
- Intercom-style controlled entry, where the person at the gate asks and someone inside answers
- Free-exit and safety devices, so a vehicle always gets out and the gate stops for anything in its path
Adding access to a gate the yard already has
An existing gate is a perfectly good place to start, and a lot of what we do is automating one rather than replacing it. We carry parts, hardware, access controllers and remote locks for exactly that.
The checks start with the track and the rollers, since most industrial entrances slide rather than swing and a track that has been driven over for years is the thing likeliest to stop a motor. After that: the leaf’s weight and span against what the hardware can drive; the fall of the ground across the run, workable on a slope with the right safety devices and alternative opening methods once it has been measured; and a home for the motor, controller and cabling that is out of the way of a forklift as well as a truck. On an estate still filling up, that assessment is worth doing early, because the answer changes what needs ordering. Where a gate will not take it, we say so and the conversation moves to what would.
Power at the gate, and installing around a live site
Where the yard has mains at the entrance, the supply question is short. Where it does not, or where trenching across a sealed hardstand is the expensive part of the job, solar with battery backup avoids the cable and keeps the running cost off the power bill. The battery earns its place a second way, keeping the gate live through an outage, and manual release means a vehicle can still be let out by hand if everything stops.
SIM-based access depends on mobile coverage at the gate itself, which is not always what you get at the office end of the site, so we check it at the entrance before specifying it.
Rolleston is still being built out, and installing on a part-occupied estate is a scheduling problem as much as an engineering one. Tell us which tenancies are trading and when the yard has to stay open to trucks, and the work gets sequenced around that rather than the other way round.
Selwyn District Council, and the Rolleston fencing rules
Selwyn District Council advises that any fence more than 2 metres tall will require a building consent and may require a resource consent. Building consent is specifically required for fences or walls higher than 2.5 metres, and for all swimming pools and their associated fences. A gate is generally read alongside the fence it sits in.
Rolleston has its own layer on top. The council’s Fencing Guide notes that in Living Z areas and in the Lowes Road ODP area, specific fencing rules apply to the sides of properties facing road or reserve boundaries. A gate on the road boundary is the one most likely to run into them, because it is the most visible thing on the frontage. Pool and spa barriers are excluded from any exemption and carry their own requirements. Where the gate sits on a boundary shared with a neighbour, the Fencing Act 1978 sets out what you owe them. Confirm the current position with Selwyn District Council before work starts.

Living with it once the crew has gone
Codes, remotes and phone credentials get issued and removed for as long as the gate is there, so decide who does that and keep the list somewhere other than one person’s memory. A missing remote means cancelling that credential and issuing a new one, which on an individually credentialled system inconveniences nobody else. Hinges, rollers and a motor cycling dozens of times a day are wearing parts, so build a servicing interval in rather than waiting for a stoppage.
Sequencing the work, and pricing it
Design, manufacture and installation, in that order, and on a part-built estate the order matters as much as the content. Design starts on your site with the opening measured, the existing gate assessed, and a headcount of who needs through. Manufacture is ours, 100% New Zealand made and New Zealand installed, with the material chosen from timber, steel, aluminium and stainless steel and larger commercial motors brought in where the leaf is heavy. Installation is planned around trading tenancies and truck movements, and it finishes with somebody on your side shown how to add and remove a user.
