Half the properties here spend the week empty and the weekend full, which is the real design brief behind most custom gates in Methven. Alongside permanent housing for roughly 1,500 to 1,700 residents, the township carries an unusually large short-stay pool for its size: holiday homes, apartments, lodges, farm stays and backpacker accommodation, most of them belonging to someone who is not on site. Group One New Zealand designs, manufactures and installs gates out here, with crews travelling from our base at Unit 1, 37 Foremans Road, Islington, Christchurch. Sydney Chappell founded the New Zealand company in 2026. Tell us about the entrance and we will come out and take a look.
An unattended entrance changes what a gate has to be. Nobody hears it labouring, notices a sagging leaf, or clears the snow off the track before guests arrive at nine at night. The specification leans towards fewer moving parts, generous ground clearance, and hardware that keeps working through a season the owner may never see.
That usually means a lighter leaf than the owner first pictures, open or slatted infill rather than a solid panel, and a motor sized with headroom. Safety devices matter more here too, because the person driving through has never used this gate before.
Our range of materials covers wood, steel, aluminium and stainless steel. Aluminium keeps a long leaf light, timber suits a lodge frontage, and stainless goes wherever a fixing has to survive repeated freeze and thaw with nobody looking at it.

An entrance nobody is standing at needs an opening method that travels. A keypad with a code you change between bookings is the usual answer. We carry parts, hardware, access controllers, remote locks and anything to do with customisation and the automation of pre-existing gates, so an existing entrance does not have to be replaced to become manageable from a distance.
If the site is a difficult one, and plenty out here are, say so at the start. If your property or commercial site is irregular, tricky, lacking in space, hard to reach or perhaps you have a very specific idea in mind, then we’re happy to talk to you. Essentially, if you can dream it, we can build it.
The township sits at about 320 metres, close to the foothills of the Southern Alps. Local forecasts record overnight temperatures falling below freezing with rain turning to snow, and the ski fields above report icy winds and storm systems right through winter.
Two things follow. The first is ground clearance: a leaf set close to the surface for a tidy look will jam on the first settled snow or a frozen ridge in a shingle drive, so the gap under the gate is set for the worst month rather than for installation day. The second is the running gear. A floor track collects ice and grit, so on an exposed entrance a cantilever arrangement that keeps the rollers off the ground is often the better answer. Fixings and hinges are chosen so nothing seizes when the temperature sits under zero for a week.
Our gates are solar powered as well, which saves you energy costs. On a holiday home at the edge of the township, or a farm entrance a long way from the switchboard, running mains power to the gate is often the largest cost in the project, and solar removes it.
Ground rarely helps either. Our range of safety devices and alternative opening methods allows us to have on sloped ground as well as flat-level.
Methven is the service town for a cropping, dairy and livestock district, so plenty of the work is agricultural: wide machinery entrances, stockyard gates, and yard access that has to take a truck turning in off the road. We can provide larger commercial motors reserved for larger, heavier gates.
There is also bare Business D zoned land on Line Road allowing light industrial, service and commercial development, and a new site there starts from the same three questions: where the posts go, how wide the opening has to be, and how power gets to the gate.

Bespoke gates are priced on quote, after the site visit, and never before. What goes into it:
Because we manufacture and install your gates ourselves, there are significant savings to be made when choosing the Group 1 team.
We’ll come out and take a look at the site and discuss ideas with you about the best solution for your situation. Measurements, slope, surface and power get settled then, and you approve the design before fabrication starts. Have the opening width, the fall across the entrance, the surface, whether power reaches it and your preferred style and material to hand, and the visit is shorter.
Then it is built. All our gates are 100% New Zealand made and installed. Installation covers posts, leaf or track, motor, safety devices and commissioning. All gates constructed by our team come with a comprehensive warranty and are backed by a full after-sales service, which counts for more than usual on a property you are not standing in front of.

Methven falls under Ashburton District Council. The Council states a fence may be built up to 2.5 metres in height from natural ground level, and recommends talking to the Planning Department about a resource consent for anything over 2 metres. On the sloping sections common near the foothills, that phrase “from natural ground level” is the one to watch, because the measurement is taken from the ground under the gate, not from the lowest point of the drive.
Where a retaining wall is involved, a fence on top of it needs a building consent where the wall exceeds 1.5 metres and the fence exceeds 2.5 metres, and a joined fence-and-retaining-wall structure needs a building consent outright. A gate and its posts sit on the boundary line, so the boundary itself is worth confirming before anything is set in concrete.
An entrance that a guest opens while the owner is in another city has to be right the first time, and that is a build question more than a hardware question. Clearance under the leaf for snow, hardware that starts cold, a finish that survives a season nobody inspects: all of it is settled at the bench. We design, manufacture and install, so there is nobody in the middle to hand the problem to. Sydney Chappell founded Group One New Zealand in 2026 and the team is small, coming inland from Islington in Christchurch. That distance is exactly why we would rather over-specify now than be called back in July. Holiday homes, lodges, farm stays and the Line Road sites all sit under Ashburton District Council’s rules, which get read before a post is set. On the group’s history, the company puts it this way: “Although Group 1 Line Marking has just started here in New Zealand, as a group we have been operating in Australia for almost 25 years.” Materials and automation options are on our page.

Plenty of the entrances we quote around here belong to people who live somewhere else. Send photographs of the opening from a few angles, a rough width, and a note on whether power reaches the gate, and we can have a useful conversation before anyone drives anywhere. The site visit still happens, and it can be done with a caretaker, a property manager or a neighbour holding the tape while we talk you through it on the phone.
Phone us on 027 424 0600 or email info@groupone.co.nz, 7am to 3pm Monday to Friday, and we will arrange a site visit in Methven. Group One New Zealand, Unit 1, 37 Foremans Road, Islington, Christchurch 8042. NZBN 9429053752833.

Yes. Remotes, access controllers and remote locks are all options alongside a coded keypad.
Not if the clearance and the running gear are specified for it, which is why we set the gap under the leaf for winter.
Often, yes. If the posts and leaf are sound we fit the motor, safety devices and opening method to what exists.
Yes, including wide machinery entrances and heavier leaves with commercial motors.
