A tractor and trailer unit turning into a merchant yard needs a wider opening than the truck that delivered the gate. Group One New Zealand designs, manufactures and installs commercial gates in Ashburton, and sets out the forecourt and yard behind them, with the crew travelling down from our Islington base in Christchurch. Sydney Chappell started the New Zealand company in 2026. Phone us on 027 424 0600 or email info@groupone.co.nz, 7am to 3pm Monday to Friday. We come out, look at the site and talk the solution through before anything is quoted or built.
Mid-Canterbury is the commercial and service centre for a farming district where primary industries contribute 27.0% of district GDP against 6.2% nationally. That shows up in the gates: merchant and grain yards, stock-handling and transport depots, and rural-commercial forecourts, where machinery with a long turning circle has to swing through in one movement.
Two site facts usually decide the configuration. The first is the span. A cantilever free-spans a wide opening with nothing crossing the ground, which matters where the entrance is rutted, gravelled and has never been truly level, because a track needs a surface to sit on and stay clean. A sliding gate on a track is the alternative where there is side room and the ground can be prepared. Single and double swing gates suit lighter traffic with room to arc, a bi-fold suits a tight frontage, and a boom or barrier arm covers a staff or visitor car park where you are managing vehicles rather than securing stock.
The second is what comes through. A van and a ute with a trailer sets one clear width. A stock truck, a container unit, a forklift crossing between sheds or a tractor with an implement on the back sets another, and it is the widest and the highest of those that the opening has to answer to.

The gate is one element of the site we work on, and on a rural-commercial frontage the rest of it matters just as much:
A worked example from this kind of site. A transport depot puts a cantilever gate on the main entrance; the same visit marks a truck path that keeps trailers off the customer forecourt, a walkthrough lane from the visitor bays to the office door, wheel stops on the bays nearest the weighbridge and a convex mirror where the yard exit meets the road. One crew, one mobilisation, one set of drawings, and the route from the road through the gate to the bay designed as a single movement. Our vision is to create safer, more efficient parking environments for both drivers and pedestrians.
Motors are sized to two things: what the leaf weighs, and how many times a day it moves. A depot gate opening for every truck movement is a different specification from a merchant frontage that opens at seven and closes at five.
Keypads, remotes, intercoms, card and fob readers, access controllers and remote locks cover the range from a driver with a remote in the cab to a contractor who needs a code for a week. Safety devices go on every automated gate. Solar runs a gate where the entrance is a long way from the switchboard, which on a rural site is common. We also retrofit motors, controllers and hardware to gates already standing, and our safety devices and alternative opening methods allow automatic gates on sloped ground as well as flat-level. If the site is irregular, tight or hard to reach, we are happy to talk it through.
Our range of materials covers wood, steel, aluminium and stainless steel. Steel carries a wide agricultural span without flexing, aluminium keeps a high-cycle leaf light on its hardware, and stainless goes into fixings that need to hold their finish. Steel is hot-dip galvanised and then powder coated, so the protection sits inside the sections as well as on them, and larger commercial motors are available for heavier custom leaves.
The region’s strongest winds blow from the north-west, and a wide solid leaf standing in an open yard is a sail. Post size and footing depth are set for the leaf and the exposure, not to a standard hole, and the hard frosts that come with the winter southerlies are the other reason those footings go deep.
All our gates are 100% New Zealand made and installed by the same team, which is where the saving sits.
Ashburton District Council states you can build a fence up to 2.5 metres in height from natural ground level, and recommends talking to the Planning Department about a resource consent for anything over 2 metres. Plenty of commercial gates sit in that band, so the conversation is worth having early.
Benched yards bring in a second rule that catches people. A fence on top of a retaining wall needs a building consent if the retaining wall is more than 1.5 metres high and the fence more than 2.5 metres high, and if the fence and the retaining wall are joined, a building consent is required outright. The Council also says boundary pegs should be located, or the boundary surveyed, before a fence goes in. A gate on a road boundary is the case most likely to trigger a district plan rule independently of building consent, and boundary obligations with a neighbour come from the Fencing Act 1978. Our equipment and installations are built to meet local requirements, but confirm the current position with Ashburton District Council before work starts.

The New Zealand business was founded in 2026 by Sydney Chappell and runs as a small team, so you know you’ll get the very best. Anything longer than that belongs to the group rather than to the local company, and is stated as such: “Although Group 1 Line Marking has just started here in New Zealand, as a group we have been operating in Australia for almost 25 years.” What it means on a merchant or transport yard is that the gate, the forecourt bays, the bollards and the mirrors sit in one contract with one crew, instead of a fencer, a marker and a bollard supplier taking turns either side of a harvest. We guarantee all the work we do, and every gate the team builds comes with a comprehensive warranty and full after-sales service. New Zealand Business Number 9429053752833. One thing is worth doing before the site visit, and it costs nothing. Locate the boundary pegs, or arrange a survey if they have gone. A gate is an expensive structure to discover on the wrong side of a line, and the Council asks for that check for good reason.

It can, if the track has a prepared base under it and drainage that keeps it clear. On a yard that has never been level, a cantilever usually gives less trouble over the years.
It is quoted per site after a visit. Span, leaf weight, ground conditions, motor duty, power or solar and the access control specification all move it.
Yes. Our crews cover the area from Amberley in the north to Timaru in the south, and west towards the foothills.
