Line marking is the painted layout that tells people and vehicles where to go on a surface somebody owns. It covers the bays and arrows in a car park, the walkways and forklift lanes on a warehouse floor, the storage zones in a distribution shed, the courts at a school, and the hatching around a loading dock. The work belongs to whoever owns the ground: property managers, warehouse operators, retailers, schools, body corporates and developers handing over a new build. Which kind of line marking you mean

The term covers several trades that have little to do with each other. Road marking is the centre lines, lane lines and edge lines in the public road corridor, which is regulated work controlled by the road controlling authority. Sports marking is fields and courts, set out to the dimensions of the code being played. Construction set-out is the temporary lines chalked or sprayed on a slab before cutting or building, and it is not a finished marking at all. What most businesses mean when they search for it is the fourth kind: permanent marking on private property, on car parks, yards and internal floors. That is the work described here.

What the surface decides

Almost every practical decision follows the surface rather than the layout.

Fresh asphalt needs curing time before anything goes on it. Marking a new seal too early wastes the paint and the visit.

Aged asphalt and chip seal are porous and often dusty. They take more preparation and more coating than people expect, and the older the surface the shorter the interval before a re-mark.

Concrete hardstand holds a crisp edge and holds it for a long time, but a power-trowelled or sealed slab has to be prepared properly or the marking sits on top of the sealer instead of bonding to the floor.

Indoor warehouse floors are their own problem: forklift tyres scrub, pallet corners drag, and washdown attacks the edges. Preparation and coating choice matter more here than anywhere else, because a lane marked badly on a busy floor is gone within a season.

Weather sits over all of it. Paint will not go down on a damp or frosted surface, and wind turns a clean edge into overspray, so an outdoor booking is a window rather than an hour.

What a car park layout has to carry

A car park is more than bays. A complete layout usually includes:

Bays, aisles and directional arrows
Accessible bays, with the dimensions and access aisle that make them usable
Loading zones, no-parking hatching and keep-clear areas
Pedestrian crossings and walkways through the parking area
Bay numbering, stencils and signage-related markings
Speed and give-way markings where an aisle meets an exit

The layout is where the value is. Bay width against aisle width decides how many spaces fit and whether drivers can turn into them without a three-point manoeuvre, and getting that wrong on paper costs far more than the paint.

Warehouse floors: lanes, paths and zones

Inside a building the marking is a safety control before it is anything else. Our service includes the design and implementation of walkthrough lanes, forklift paths, and specific zones for storage, which help in minimising work-related accidents and improving logistical operations.

In practice that means separating people from machines wherever it can be done, marking the routes forklifts take rather than the routes they have drifted into, and giving racking, staging and dispatch areas defined edges so the floor stops being negotiated afresh every shift. Where pedestrians and forklifts have to cross, the crossing is marked as a crossing, not left as a gap.

Courts, playgrounds and sports surfaces work the same way but to fixed dimensions: the code sets the sizes, and the surface and the run-off space decide what fits.

From measure-up to the last line

Design starts on your site. We’ll come out and take a look at the site and discuss ideas with you about the best solution for your situation, measuring the area, noting the surface, the falls and the existing markings, and drawing a layout around the vehicles and foot traffic you actually have.

Preparation and set-out follow: stencils, numbering and any custom markings are prepared for that layout, and the lines are set out on the surface before a drop of paint goes down. This is the stage where a layout gets checked against reality, because a bay that works on a plan can be unusable next to a downpipe.

Application is the day itself. Surface preparation first, old lines removed or covered where needed, then the marking. The crew tells you on the day how long to keep vehicles off while it cures, because that moves with the product, the surface and the weather.

Get a layout drawn up

Line marking is nearly always the last trade on a site, which is exactly why it gets squeezed. New seal and new concrete need their curing time before anything is painted on them, and a marking day booked before the surface is ready either gets postponed or produces a finish that has to be done again. Questions people ask

How long does line marking last?

It depends on the surface and the traffic more than the paint. A staff car park on sound concrete holds its lines for years. A forklift lane on a busy floor, or bays on old porous asphalt, come around much sooner.

Do we have to close the whole car park?

Rarely. Most sites are marked in sections around trading hours. Tell us when the bays are emptiest and the programme is built around that.

Can old lines be removed rather than painted over?

Yes. Removal is part of surface preparation, and it is the right call when the layout is changing rather than being refreshed.

Are the products safe to use around the public?

Yes. We use environmentally safe products specifically so the work is not harmful to the public or the environment, which matters on a school, a retail site or a food-handling floor.
