    Custom Gates Timaru

You can usually pick the failure on a coastal gate before you get out of the car: the leaf still looks respectable and the hinges have gone orange. Airborne sea salt significantly increases the corrosion of metals used in construction, and Timaru sits in it year round, which is why custom gates here get specified from the metal outward rather than from the picture inward. Group One New Zealand designs, manufactures and installs gates through South Canterbury, with crews travelling down from our base at Unit 1, 37 Foremans Road, Islington, Christchurch. Sydney Chappell founded the New Zealand company in 2026. Tell us where the entrance is and we will come and look at it.

Sea salt sets the specification before style does

Our range of materials covers wood, steel, aluminium and stainless steel, and on this coast the ranking between them shifts. Steel is still the workhorse for a wide or heavy gate, but it goes in hot-dip galvanised and powder-coated rather than painted, which is the finish local conditions have already taught everyone here to ask for. Aluminium and stainless stop being an upgrade and start being the sensible default, particularly on a smaller pedestrian gate or a frontage close to the sea. Timber holds up well and reads warmer, and its hardware still has to be chosen with the same care.

The leaf is rarely what gives out first. Hinges, tracks, rollers, fasteners, the motor housing and the little bracket holding the safety edge all sit in the same air, and a stainless fixing beside a galvanised post costs a few dollars more and outlives it by years. When we specify a gate for a Timaru address, the fixings schedule gets as much attention as the panel design. Winters here are short, cold and windy, so hardware also has to keep working when the sea breeze is pushing on a leaf that is already loaded.

    Custom Gates Timaru

Shared driveways, cross-lease sections and Edwardian frontages

Timaru carries a significant number of cross-lease properties, particularly in suburbs developed from the 1960s to the 1990s. A gate on one of those goes onto a driveway more than one household uses, so the design question is not only how it opens but how it opens for everybody: separate remotes, a keypad, a free-exit loop, and a leaf that clears the shared strip without blocking a neighbour mid-swing. Those are worth settling with the other party before the design is drawn, not after the posts are in.

Central Timaru is a different job again. The city has an historically beautiful Edwardian central business district, and a gate on one of those street frontages has to sit against period detailing without pretending to be a museum piece. Vertical bar work, cast detail, timber with proportions that answer the building: it is a design conversation, and it is exactly the kind we would rather have on site than over email.

Newer subdivisions on the southern and western fringes bring a plainer brief, and the surrounding belt of rural and lifestyle blocks brings the wide ones.

Port traffic, Washdyke yards and heavier gates

PrimePort handles around $1.1 billion in annual exports, and the meat, dairy, food-processing, engineering and logistics operators around the port and Washdyke run the sort of entrances that swallow light hardware. Wider spans, trucks in and out all day, and a leaf heavy enough that the motor is a specification decision rather than a catalogue pick. We can provide larger commercial motors reserved for larger, heavier gates, plus access controllers, remote locks and keypads for staff, contractors and deliveries.

If the entrance is a difficult one, say so early. If your property or commercial site is irregular, tricky, lacking in space, hard to reach or perhaps you have a very specific idea in mind, then we’re happy to talk to you. Essentially, if you can dream it, we can build it.

How the number is arrived at

Bespoke gates are quoted per site, on quote only. What the visit settles, and what then drives the figure:

    • The clear opening span, and whether it becomes a single swing, a double swing or a slider
    • Material, and the corrosion protection that goes with it
    • Leaf weight, and therefore motor size
    • Power at the gate, or solar
    • Ground conditions, fall across the entrance, and access for the install
    • Safety devices, opening method and any access control

Because we manufacture and install your gates ourselves, there are significant savings to be made when choosing the Group 1 team. Our gates are solar powered as well, which saves you energy costs, and on a rural or lifestyle entrance a long way from a switchboard that often removes an expensive cable run from the job.

    Measure-up, design, build, install

We’ll come out and take a look at the site and discuss ideas with you about the best solution for your situation. Measurements, fall, surface, power and the corrosion exposure all get recorded on that visit, and you approve the design before fabrication starts.

The gate is then made and brought down. All our gates are 100% New Zealand made and installed. On installation day the posts go in, the leaf is hung or the track is laid, the motor is fitted, and the safety devices are commissioned with you operating it yourself before we pack up. All gates constructed by our team come with a comprehensive warranty and are backed by a full after-sales service.

Automatic gates are not restricted to level entrances either. Our range of safety devices and alternative opening methods allows us to have on sloped ground as well as flat-level.

    Highly Recommend Group 1 Linemarking!

We recently hired Group 1 Linemarking for a few of our residential strata projects, and the results exceeded our expectations. The team was punctual, professional, and clearly experienced. The line marking was crisp, precise, and done exactly to spec. Communication throughout the process was smooth, and they were flexible with scheduling, which made things a lot easier on our end. If you need reliable, high-quality line marking services, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Group 1. Great job!

    Two consent questions, not one

This is the part that catches people out locally, because the height that matters depends on which rule you are reading.

Timaru District Council treats fences or walls less than 2.5 metres high as exempt building work. Residential swimming pool fencing is expressly not exempt and requires a building consent, submitted through the Council’s Simpli portal.

Separately, the Timaru District Plan caps road boundary fences at a maximum height of 2 metres in its residential and related zones. A driveway gate sits on that road boundary, with its posts in it, so a street-front gate can be building-consent-exempt at 2.2 metres and still breach a District Plan standard and need a land use consent. Check your zone with the Council, and we will design to what it allows.

Group One New Zealand, and the metal that goes in

Choosing the material is the job here, and it is a choice we make rather than inherit, because the leaf is fabricated to our own drawing. Sea air moves stainless steel and aluminium out of the upsell column and into the sensible-default column, and it does the same for the hinges, tracks, fixings and motor housings that give out long before the gate does. Sydney Chappell founded Group One New Zealand in 2026 and it is a small team. Everything is built at Islington in Christchurch and trucked down for the installation, which is why the finish schedule is written on the drawing instead of decided on site. A shared cross-lease access that has to work for two households, or an Edwardian street frontage that wants to read as period, both come back to the same thing: one gate, made for one opening. The company’s own line on its history: “Although Group 1 Line Marking has just started here in New Zealand, as a group we have been operating in Australia for almost 25 years.” The page covers materials and automation.

    Get the entrance looked at

Whatever we recommend for your gate, the corrosion protection will be written into the quote rather than left as an assumption: the grade of the metal, the finish on it, and what the hinges, tracks and fixings are made of. That is the part that decides whether the gate is still swinging sweetly in ten years, and it is worth reading before you sign anything, from us or anyone else.

Phone us on 027 424 0600 or email info@groupone.co.nz, 7am to 3pm Monday to Friday, and we will arrange a site visit in Timaru. Group One New Zealand, Unit 1, 37 Foremans Road, Islington, Christchurch 8042. NZBN 9429053752833.

    What Timaru owners ask

What does a custom gate cost here?

It is quoted after the measure-up. Span, material, corrosion protection, motor size and the ground at the entrance all move it, and none of those can be judged from a phone call.

Which material actually lasts in this air?

Stainless and aluminium need the least attention. Galvanised and powder-coated steel does well where you need the strength of steel. We will give you a straight answer on site once we have seen how exposed the entrance is.

Our driveway is shared. Can two households operate one gate?

Yes. Multiple remotes, a keypad or a coded entry all handle that, and the swing path gets designed so nobody is boxed in.

Can you match a gate to an older street frontage?

That is a design job, and a good one. Bring photographs of the building and any existing ironwork to the visit.

Do you take on port and industrial entrances?

Yes, including wide spans, heavy leaves, commercial motors and access control.
