    Driveway Gates Amberley

Getting out in winter rain to swing a gate open, then getting out again to close it, is the thing most people want to stop doing. Automation is why a good number of the driveway gates we build around Amberley get built at all, in a town whose property mix runs to standalone houses, lifestyle properties and lifestyle sections with a settled, mostly older ownership base. Group One New Zealand designs, manufactures and installs gates through North Canterbury, with crews travelling the 50 km up State Highway 1 from a base on Foremans Road in Islington, Christchurch.

Opening the gate without getting out of the car

The point of an automated gate is that the driver never leaves the seat. What makes that reliable is the pairing of the right motor with the right way of triggering it.

    • A remote in each vehicle is the simplest arrangement, and the one most households settle on.
    • A keypad on a pedestal covers visitors, family and contractors without handing out remotes.
    • Bluetooth or mobile control opens the gate from a phone, which suits anyone who would rather not keep track of a fob.
    • SIM-based control lets you open the gate for someone while you are elsewhere entirely.

Power comes from the mains or from solar. Solar suits an entrance set back from the house, saves cutting a trench down the drive and cuts the running cost. Motor size follows the weight of the leaf and how often the gate cycles, so a lighter aluminium gate can often be run by a smaller motor than a steel one of the same span. Safety devices and alternative opening methods allow automatic gates on sloped ground as well as flat-level ground, and a manual release means the gate still opens in a power cut.

If a gate already hangs at your entrance, automating it may be all you need. We supply parts, hardware, access controllers and remote locks, and whether it is worth doing comes down to the weight of the leaf, whether the frame is still true and whether the posts will carry the extra load.

    Driveway Gates Amberley

Is there a standard width for a driveway gate?

Manufacturers sell standard widths. Driveways are not standard, which is why the width that matters is the clear opening your own entrance needs.

Work it out from the vehicles: a car, a ute and trailer, a campervan, a horse float, or a farm vehicle on a lifestyle block. Allow for a longer vehicle turning in off the road, because a trailer tracks tighter than the tow vehicle and clips a post that looked generous on paper. The clear opening is measured between the posts, not across the concrete.

A stock-width gate works when your opening happens to match it. When it does not, the mismatch is packed out at one end, or the posts get set to suit the gate rather than the driveway, and you live with that for the life of the entrance.

Swing or slide, and which is cheaper

Neither is cheaper by nature. The cost follows what your entrance demands.

A swing gate is the simpler build: posts, hinges and either one leaf or a pair. It needs clear arc inside the boundary, the full opening width for a single leaf or half of it for each of a pair, on ground level enough to let the leaf travel. A sliding gate needs no arc but wants a level run alongside the driveway roughly as long as the opening, plus the groundwork to keep that run true. Less air, more preparation.

Where the driveway rises away from the road, a swing leaf climbs as it opens and has to clear its high point, which is often the argument for a slider. Gates should open inward, away from the road, so there has to be flat ground just inside the boundary to receive them.

Which gate suits a North Canterbury entrance

Our range of materials covers wood, steel, aluminium and stainless steel. NIWA groups the coastal strip north of Amberley as its own Canterbury climate zone, with relatively mild winters and rather high annual rainfall peaking in winter, and the region’s strongest winds are the north-westerlies that sweep the plains.

Wet more than cold, then, with wind as the load case. Steel carries wide spans without flexing and should be hot-dip galvanised before powder-coating, so the protection is inside the sections too. Aluminium is light, resists the weather with very little upkeep and is easier on hinges and motors. Timber suits a house it can be matched to and needs a frame that will stay square through a wet winter. Stainless steel goes into fixings that must not seize. A solid infill across a wide opening takes the full push of a nor’wester, so slatted or spaced infill is often the better structural answer.

Consent in the Hurunui: what we can tell you, and what we cannot

Here is the honest position. We found no Amberley-specific or Hurunui-specific fence or gate height rule to point you at, so we are not going to quote you a number as though we had.

What holds nationally is clear enough. MBIE’s Building Performance guidance states that a building consent is not required for fences or hoardings up to 2.5 metres high. It also notes that district plans made under the Resource Management Act 1991 may still require a resource consent for fences over a certain height, usually over about 2 metres, and that fences to swimming pools sit outside that exemption and do require a building consent. Boundary fences remain subject to the Fencing Act 1978 whatever the height.

A driveway gate stands on the road boundary, which is the position most likely to bring a district plan rule into play. So the step that matters is confirming the Hurunui District Plan limits with Hurunui District Council before you commit to a height or a design. The Council’s seat is in Amberley itself, which makes that a short conversation rather than a project.

    Design, manufacture, installation

Design starts at your entrance with the opening, the fall, the surface and the vehicles all measured. Manufacture follows those figures. Installation covers the post holes, the footings, the hanging, the automation and the testing, and we run the controls through with you before leaving. All our gates are 100% New Zealand made and installed, with a comprehensive warranty and a full after-sales service behind them.

Where the cost sits on a Hurunui entrance

Pricing is on quote, and on the entrances we look at up here the automation usually accounts for more of the spread between one job and the next than the leaf itself does. The controller, how many remotes and codes are issued with it, and whether the safety gear has to work across a slope are all priced separately, and a keypad on its own pedestal out at the road is a different piece of work from a receiver fixed to the gate post.

Supply is the next question. An entrance within easy reach of the meter box prices differently from one that needs a solar panel and a battery sized for how often the gate will actually cycle. Under those two sit the ordinary structural inputs: opening span and configuration, leaf weight and infill, material and finish including galvanising and powder-coating, the fall across the entrance, and what the post holes are going into. The run north is quoted openly in the job rather than buried in it.

Group One New Zealand, and why we told you what we do not know

The Hurunui section above is the honest shape of a small outfit. We would sooner send you to the Council than hand you a height figure we cannot stand behind. Group One New Zealand was started here in 2026 by Sydney Chappell, and it has stayed a small team on purpose, designing, manufacturing and installing its own gates rather than passing the job along. The longer record belongs on the other side of the Tasman, and the company states it plainly: “Although Group 1 Line Marking has just started here in New Zealand, as a group we have been operating in Australia for almost 25 years.” The credentials in full, and the rest of what we make, are on the page.

    Arrange a site visit

One call to Hurunui District Council before you settle on a height will tell you more than any figure we could put on this page. Ring them, then ring us, and we will design to whatever they confirm.

    What Amberley owners ask

How much does a gate cost in New Zealand?

There is no meaningful national answer. Span, leaf weight, material, finish, ground conditions and automation are what set it, so the measure-up comes before the price.

Which are the best driveway gates?

The ones matched to your opening width, your exposure and how much maintenance you want to do. For a wide rural entrance that usually means metal; for a house frontage where the look leads, timber can be the right call.

Can you gate an entrance that is a long way from the house?

Yes. That is the usual case for a solar-powered motor, with a keypad or a SIM-based controller so visitors are not left waiting at the road.

Do you come this far north for one gate?

Yes. Crews run from Islington out to Amberley and across the Hurunui as a matter of course, and the travel is quoted openly in the job.
