    Custom Gates Rolleston

Title has come through, the house is up, and at the road end there is a bare driveway and nothing else: no posts, no hardware, no conduit. That is where most custom gates in Rolleston start, because most of the town’s housing stock was built between 2010 and 2019 and the subdivisions at Acland Park and Faringdon are still adding to it. Group One New Zealand designs, manufactures and installs gates out here, with crews travelling from our base at Unit 1, 37 Foremans Road, Islington, Christchurch. Sydney Chappell founded the New Zealand company in 2026. Send us the address and the opening width, and we will come out and look at it.

Nothing to work around, which is an advantage

A first gate is an easier brief than a replacement, and it is worth using that. There is no forty-year-old post line dictating where the new posts can go, no existing leaf to match, and no hardware someone else chose. The entrance is whatever the survey and the driveway made it, and the gate can be designed to that rather than squeezed into it.

Two things do need deciding early. The first is swing or slide, which the driveway length and the fall across the entrance settle between them. The second is power, and that one has a deadline attached, because a conduit run from the house to the gate is cheap while the ground is still open and expensive once the drive is sealed and the lawn is in.

Not every entrance is straightforward, and the awkward ones are welcome. If your property or commercial site is irregular, tricky, lacking in space, hard to reach or perhaps you have a very specific idea in mind, then we’re happy to talk to you. Essentially, if you can dream it, we can build it.

    Custom Gates Rolleston

When solar is the sensible answer, not the green one

Our gates are solar powered as well, which saves you energy costs. On a new section where the trench is already dug, mains power at the gate is easy enough. On a rear section, a long approach, or a lifestyle block on the town’s edge, the cost of getting a cable to the gate can exceed the cost of the motor, and solar removes that line from the job entirely.

Materials get chosen against the same open-country conditions. Our range covers wood, steel, aluminium and stainless steel. Summer here brings hot dry north-westerly winds off the Alps across the plains, and a new subdivision frontage has no mature trees to slow them down, so a large solid leaf becomes a sail and works the motor and the hinges every time it gusts. Slats, vertical bars or a louvred infill let the wind through and behave better. Winter brings frequent overnight frosts, which is the argument for setting clearances and choosing fixings that will not seize in a cold snap.

Bigger openings, heavier leaves, and iZONE

Rolleston is home to iZONE, New Zealand’s largest business park, and the gate brief there is a different animal: wider spans, vehicle traffic all day, and a leaf heavy enough to need real hardware. We can provide larger commercial motors reserved for larger, heavier gates, along with access controllers, keypads and remote locks for staff and delivery access.

Ground is rarely dead level at a yard entrance either. Our range of safety devices and alternative opening methods allows us to have on sloped ground as well as flat-level, so a crossing that rises from the road does not force you back to a manual gate.

What moves the price on a bespoke gate

Every gate is quoted on its own, after the site visit. No figure quoted over the phone survives contact with the actual entrance. The things that move it:

    • Clear span, and whether that becomes a single swing, a double swing or a slider
    • Material and finish
    • Leaf weight, which decides motor size
    • Whether power reaches the gate, or solar is going in
    • Fall across the entrance, the surface, and what the posts will be founded in
    • Safety devices, remotes, keypads and any access control

Because we manufacture and install your gates ourselves, there are significant savings to be made when choosing the Group 1 team. There is no middle step between the workshop and your driveway.

    Site visit, drawing, build, install

We’ll come out and take a look at the site and discuss ideas with you about the best solution for your situation. That visit produces the measurements and the design; you approve it before anything is cut.

The gate is then made. All our gates are 100% New Zealand made and installed. Installation covers the posts, the leaf or the track, the motor, the safety devices, and commissioning with you standing there working the remote yourself. All gates constructed by our team come with a comprehensive warranty and are backed by a full after-sales service.

Worth having ready for the visit: the clear opening width, whether the entrance slopes, what the surface is at the gate, whether power reaches it, and any style or material you have already settled on.

    Highly Recommend Group 1 Linemarking!

We recently hired Group 1 Linemarking for a few of our residential strata projects, and the results exceeded our expectations. The team was punctual, professional, and clearly experienced. The line marking was crisp, precise, and done exactly to spec. Communication throughout the process was smooth, and they were flexible with scheduling, which made things a lot easier on our end. If you need reliable, high-quality line marking services, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Group 1. Great job!

Where Selwyn District Council comes in

A driveway gate sits on the road boundary, with its posts in it, so the district’s fencing rules apply to it directly. Selwyn District Council advises that any fence more than 2 metres tall will require a building consent and may require a resource consent, and separately requires a building consent for fences or walls higher than 2.5 metres, and for all swimming pools and their associated fences.

There is a Rolleston-specific layer as well. The Council’s Fencing Guide notes that in Living Z areas and in the Lowes Road ODP area, specific fencing rules apply to the sides of properties facing either road or reserve boundaries. If your section sits in one of those, check with the Council before the design is locked, and we will draw to what applies.

Pool gates are their own category, and any gate forming part of a pool barrier gets designed to meet the barrier rules rather than to look good on its own.

Group One New Zealand, and why the crew travels

We are not from here, and the case for going through us is the build rather than the postcode. Gates are drawn and made at Islington in Christchurch, then driven out to Selwyn: a one-off leaf sized to a driveway that has never carried a gate, with the power run planned instead of inherited. Sydney Chappell founded Group One New Zealand in 2026 and it is a small team, which is why the person who quotes a subdivision frontage can quote an iZONE yard entrance too and mean both numbers. The Council has particular rules for what faces a road or reserve boundary, and a driveway gate sits precisely there, so that gets read before anything is ordered. Solar is worth raising early on a section where the crossing is already poured. On the longer record behind the group, the company says: “Although Group 1 Line Marking has just started here in New Zealand, as a group we have been operating in Australia for almost 25 years.” The page has the full range.

Get the gate into the plan early

The best time to book the measure-up is before the driveway is sealed and the landscaping goes in. Posts and conduit are far simpler in open ground, and knowing the gate’s position lets the drive be finished around it rather than cut into afterwards. If the concrete has already gone down, we still work with it; it is just a longer conversation about where the posts can go.

Phone us on 027 424 0600 or email info@groupone.co.nz, 7am to 3pm Monday to Friday, and we will book a time to come out to Rolleston. Group One New Zealand, Unit 1, 37 Foremans Road, Islington, Christchurch 8042. NZBN 9429053752833.

    Questions from Rolleston property owners

What does a driveway gate cost?

There is no standard price, and any number given before the visit is a guess. Span, material, leaf weight, motor size, power supply and the ground at the entrance all move it. We quote after we have measured.

Does automation add much to the job?

It depends on the leaf. A light aluminium slider on level ground and a heavy double swing on a rising drive need different motors and different safety devices, so the automation cost tracks the gate, not a fixed rate.

Can you match a gate to the fencing already on the section?

Usually. Bring us a photo on the visit and we will look at profile, spacing and finish, then design the gate to sit with it.

Do you install at iZONE and other commercial sites?

Yes. Wider spans, heavier leaves and access control for staff and deliveries are all part of the same service.

How do you handle a sloping entrance?

With safety devices and alternative opening methods suited to the fall. A slope narrows the options but rarely rules out automation.
