Measure the widest thing that has to come through the entrance, then add the turn it needs to make. That is where an industrial gates job in Ashburton starts, because a gap sized for a truck is rarely sized for a header. Group One New Zealand designs, manufactures and installs gates for mid-Canterbury yards and automates the ones already standing on them, travelling down from a base on Foremans Road in Islington, Christchurch. Sydney Chappell founded the New Zealand company in 2026. Tell us what has to pass through and we will come and measure the opening properly.
Primary industries account for 27.0% of this district’s GDP against 6.2% nationally, and the sites reflect it: grain and seed stores, stock and produce handling, transport depots and rural-commercial yards. Wide is the normal starting point, and that changes which gate makes sense.
A sliding gate runs on a ground track and needs clear run-back for the full length of the leaf. A cantilever gate carries its weight off support posts with nothing running across the opening, which suits a wide entry, a metalled apron, or ground that carries a lot of dust and chaff at the wrong time of year. Swing leaves need clear space inside the boundary and a good deal of it at these widths, and a solid infill has plenty of area for a north-west gale to work on. Bi-fold leaves fold back into the reveal where a yard cannot spare the room for either.
Our range of materials covers wood, steel, aluminium and stainless steel. We can provide larger commercial motors for heavier leaves, our gates are solar powered as well, which saves you energy costs, and our range of safety devices and alternative opening methods allows us to have automatic gates on sloped ground as well as flat-level.

Seasonal sites ask a gate for two different things across one year. Through the peak it barely stops: contractors, cartage, casual drivers and machinery moving in both directions, often before daylight. Out of season the same entrance is unattended for days and the priority flips to keeping it shut.
That difference is worth designing for rather than working around. Motor duty gets set by the busy month, not the average one. Access control is where the seasonal side lives: credentials issued to contractors and cartage drivers for the weeks they need them, then taken back rather than left circulating until next year. We hold access controllers, remote locks, parts and hardware, so this can be added to a gate that is already on the yard.

Three pieces of information get a mid-Canterbury quote moving, and they are all things you already know:
Whatever you know about the boundary is worth raising in the same call, whether that is a survey plan, a set of pegs, or the fact that nobody has seen them in twenty years. If your site is irregular, tricky, lacking in space, hard to reach or perhaps you have a very specific idea in mind, then we’re happy to talk to you.
This is the detail that catches people out on rural-commercial sites. A slider or a cantilever needs somewhere to go when it opens, and that run-back has to sit inside your own boundary for the full length of the leaf. On a wide opening the parked gate can take up more of the frontage than the opening itself.
Ashburton District Council advises finding the boundary pegs of your property, or having the boundary surveyed, before building a fence, because failing to do it may mean moving the fence later. For a gate that advice carries further than it does for a fence. A fence sits on the line; a sliding gate lives beside it, and if the run-back strays over the boundary it is not a matter of a few millimetres to fix. We check that run on the visit, and where the ground will not give it up, a swing or bi-fold arrangement is often the honest answer.
The gateway is usually where a site’s vehicle traffic is at its most concentrated, and on a working yard it is where a truck, a forklift and a person on foot are most likely to meet.
Group One New Zealand does line marking, bollards, wheel stops, speed humps, convex safety mirrors and safety fencing as well as gates, so this gets handled as one layout rather than a gate followed by a list of afterthoughts. Our service includes the design and implementation of walkthrough lanes, forklift paths, and specific zones for storage, which help in minimising work-related accidents and improving logistical operations. Bollards go where reversing traffic can reach the gate posts, the motor and the control pedestal. A convex mirror goes where a driver leaving the yard cannot see enough of the road. Fencing carries the boundary on from the gate.

If the posts, the leaf and the track are sound, adding a motor, safety devices and a controller to an existing gate is nearly always cheaper than a replacement, and we carry the parts and hardware to do it. On yards where the gate has been chained open all season because working it by hand costs too much time, automation and access control between them usually pay for the visit.
Ashburton District Council states that you can build a fence up to 2.5 metres in height from natural ground level, and recommends talking to the Planning Department about a resource consent for anything over 2 metres. On a yard where security height is the point, that conversation is worth having early.
Retaining walls bring a second rule. A building consent is required if the retaining wall is more than 1.5 metres high and the fence more than 2.5 metres high, and a building consent is required whenever the fence and retaining wall are joined. Sites with a cut and fill entrance run into this more often than flat ones. Check your own situation with the Council and we will design to what it allows.

The gate that ends up across a grain store entrance is drawn, made and fitted by the same team: all our gates are 100% New Zealand made and installed, with a comprehensive warranty and a full after-sales service behind them. Sydney Chappell founded Group One New Zealand in 2026, and it is a small team, so you know you’ll get the very best. In the company’s own words: “Although Group 1 Line Marking has just started here in New Zealand, as a group we have been operating in Australia for almost 25 years.” Painting the truck path, setting the wheel stops and hanging the leaf are all in-house, which is how a mid-Canterbury yard ends up with one quote and one crew instead of three trades arguing about who goes first. The wider range sits on our page. NZBN 9429053752833.
Before we come out, it is worth knowing where your boundary actually is. Pegs, a survey plan, or even a title diagram makes the difference between quoting a gate and quoting a gate you may have to move. If you cannot find the pegs, say so on the phone and we will factor a survey into the conversation rather than discovering the problem with a post hole already dug. Yes. That is what the controller and remote locks are for, and how access gets removed afterwards is part of the same setup.
A ground track collects whatever the yard produces, which is one of the reasons a cantilever is worth considering on a dusty site. We look at what the ground does before recommending either.
