A gate that still works on a frozen morning
The township sits at about 320 metres near the foothills of the Southern Alps. Local forecasts record overnight temperatures below freezing and rain turning to snow, and the ski fields above report icy winds and storm systems through winter. On a commercial gate that turns four ordinary decisions into important ones.
- Track and rollers. Water sitting in a ground track freezes, and a slider that jams at 6am is a slider that will be forced. A cantilever free-spans the opening with nothing in the ground to freeze, which is worth weighing up here more than in town.
- Motor and battery. On a solar setup, short winter days and heavy morning use pull harder on the battery than the summer specification suggests, so the panel and battery are sized for July rather than January.
- The controller enclosure. Condensation inside a poorly sealed box is what actually kills electronics on a cold site, so sealing and mounting position get specified rather than assumed.
- The manual release. Whoever is on duty has to find and operate it in the dark, wearing gloves, without a manual. We show it to your staff before we leave.
Access control does the rest of the work: keypads, remotes, intercoms, card and fob readers, access controllers and remote locks, mixed so guests, staff and suppliers each get in their own way. Safety devices go on every automated gate. We also retrofit motors, controllers and hardware to a gate already on site, and our safety devices and alternative opening methods allow automatic gates on sloped ground as well as flat-level.

Car parks that fill and empty with the season
For a town of roughly 1,500 to 1,700 permanent residents, the commercial base is unusual: dozens of holiday homes, apartments, lodges, farm stays and backpacker accommodation, plus bare Business D zoned land on Line Road that allows light industrial, service and commercial development. Accommodation car parks sit half empty for months and then take every vehicle at once through the Mt Hutt season, which is exactly the situation a marked layout is for.
So the gate is one element of the site we work on:
- Car park bays, aisles, arrows and hatching, sized for a full-season load rather than a quiet week
- Internal traffic lanes, walkthrough lanes and forklift paths
- Designated storage and loading zones marked on the yard or the shed floor
- Bollards protecting switchboards, ski racks, plant and door jambs
- Wheel stops, speed humps and convex safety mirrors where an exit comes out blind
- Safety and palisade fencing carrying the boundary into the gate posts
A worked example. A lodge puts an automated gate on its entrance off the road; the same visit marks guest bays, a shuttle standing area, a walkthrough lane from the bays to the door that stays clear when the vehicles are packed in, and a mirror on the exit where a snow bank blocks the view. Which gate the entrance takes
Span first, then side room for a track run, leaf weight, duty cycle, and what has to fit through. Sliding gates need a clear run alongside and a track that can be kept clean. Cantilevers free-span the opening with nothing crossing the ground. Single and double swing gates suit lighter traffic with room to arc, a bi-fold suits a tight frontage, and a boom or barrier arm suits a car park where you are managing vehicles rather than securing a yard.
Vehicles set the clear width. A van and a ute with a trailer is one specification. A shuttle bus, a stock truck, a container unit or a forklift crossing between buildings is another, and the widest one decides the opening.
Materials and finish for a site that ices up
Our range of materials covers wood, steel, aluminium and stainless steel. Steel holds a wide span without flexing, aluminium keeps a leaf light on hardware that has to move when it is cold, and stainless goes into fixings that must hold their finish. Steel is hot-dip galvanised and then powder coated, and larger commercial motors are held for heavier custom leaves.
Footings are the other cold-weather decision. Post size and depth are set for the leaf they carry and for ground that freezes and thaws through the winter, not to a standard hole.

Ashburton District Council, and the approach off the highway
Methven sits in the Ashburton district, so it is Ashburton District Council’s rules that apply here. The Council recommends talking to its Planning Department about a resource consent for anything over 2 metres, and a fence may be built up to 2.5 metres in height from natural ground level. On a benched site there is a second rule: a fence on top of a retaining wall needs a building consent where the wall exceeds 1.5 metres and the fence exceeds 2.5 metres, and a joined fence-and-retaining-wall structure needs a building consent outright.
How vehicles reach the entrance has changed too. The Council and NZTA have been lowering speed limits through the township, including the SH77 north end coming down from 100 km/h to 60 km/h, which affects approach speeds and the standing space a vehicle needs in front of a gate off the highway. A gate on a road boundary is the case most likely to trigger a district plan rule independently of building consent, and boundary obligations with a neighbour come from the Fencing Act 1978. Our equipment and installations are built to meet local requirements, but confirm the current position with Ashburton District Council before work starts.
