Where the gate sits matters as much as what it looks like. On a rural entrance you want enough distance between the road and the gate that a ute and trailer can pull fully clear of the carriageway while it opens, and that single measurement shapes the rest of the job. Group One New Zealand designs, manufactures and installs driveway gates around Ashburton and across mid-Canterbury, with crews travelling out from a base on Foremans Road in Islington, Christchurch.
Work backwards from the longest vehicle that uses the entrance. If a truck has to wait on the seal while an automatic gate cycles, the setback is too short, and no amount of good hardware fixes that afterwards.
Three things get decided at the same time:
On a township section the same logic applies at smaller scale. Most of Ashburton’s residential stock went up between 2000 and 2009, on sections with a driveway laid straight off the street, so there the question is whether a swing leaf has room to open without the car sitting over the footpath.

Primary industries generate 27.0 percent of this district’s GDP, against 6.2 percent nationally, and it shows in what comes through the gateways we measure. A tractor with an implement, a stock truck, a grain trailer or a horse float all need more clear width than a car does, and the wide opening they need is exactly what makes a single leaf too heavy.
Where the driveway rises away from the road, a swing leaf climbs as it opens and must be hung to clear its highest point. On those entrances a slider on level track is usually the better piece of engineering.
Pricing is on quote. The input that separates one mid-Canterbury entrance from the next is nearly always clear width, because a gateway sized to let a stock truck or a tractor with an implement through asks for a span no house frontage needs, and everything else scales off it. Widen the opening and leaf weight climbs with it, which pulls in heavier hinges, a bigger post section and a larger motor in the same movement.
Configuration is the second lever, and neither answer is cheaper by nature. A swing pair is the simpler build of posts, hinges and leaves. A slider spends less on air and more on preparing a run-back that has to stay true under a loaded axle. Whichever your entrance is already shaped for is the one that costs least, and the room you have decides that, not a price list.
Under those two, the quote follows gate style and infill, the material and its finish with hot-dip galvanising and powder-coating specified in their own right, the fall and surface at the gate line and what the posts go into, the automation, access hardware and safety devices, whether power reaches the entrance or has to be brought to it, and the run out to your property.
Ashburton District Council states you can build a fence up to 2.5 metres in height from the natural ground level. Above 2 metres, the Council recommends talking to its Planning Department to see whether a resource consent is required, and a driveway gate on the road boundary is the case most likely to bring a district plan rule into play.
Two structural rules are worth knowing before the design is fixed. If your fence sits on top of a retaining wall, a building consent is required where the retaining wall is more than 1.5 metres high and the fence more than 2.5 metres high. If the fence and the retaining wall are joined, a Building Consent is required regardless. Swimming pool fencing is separately regulated and enforced by the Council, and sits outside any general exemption.
The Council also advises finding your boundary pegs, or having the boundary surveyed, before building a fence, since failing to do so may mean moving it later. On a gate this bites harder than on a fence: the post positions fix the swing arc, the setback and the sight line all at once.
Knowing exactly where that line runs matters for a second reason. Where the gate stands on a boundary you share with a neighbour, it is the Fencing Act 1978 rather than the Council that governs what the two of you owe each other, including giving them notice of what you intend before work begins. That is national law, so it applies whatever height you settle on, and on a rural entrance where the boundary has been a shelter belt for decades it is a conversation worth having before any posts are ordered. Confirm the current requirements with Ashburton District Council before work starts.
Our range of materials covers wood, steel, aluminium and stainless steel. Winter southerlies bring hard frosts to the plains and the region’s strongest winds come from the north-west, so a mid-Canterbury gate has to handle ground movement and wind load on the same site.
Steel carries the widest rural spans without flexing, and it should be hot-dip galvanised before powder-coating so the protection is inside the sections too. Aluminium is far lighter, which is easier on hinges, posts and a motor. Timber suits township frontages and older houses. Stainless steel goes into fixings that must keep working. A solid infill on a wide leaf catches the full force of a nor’wester, so spaced or slatted infill is often the better call on an exposed entrance. Footings go deeper than people expect, because frost movement and a daily swinging load work on the same post.

A gate a long way from the house is the classic case for solar power. A solar-powered motor runs its own supply at the gate, which saves trenching a cable down the drive and cuts the running cost. Where mains power is already close, or the gate cycles constantly, wire it.
Motor size follows leaf weight and how often the gate is used. Access can run through remotes, a keypad, Bluetooth or mobile control, or a SIM-based unit that lets you open the gate for a contractor or a stock truck without walking down. Safety devices and alternative opening methods are what allow automatic gates on sloped as well as flat-level ground. We also carry parts, hardware, access controllers and remote locks, so automating a sound gate you already have is a real option.
Design starts at the entrance, with the setback, span, fall and vehicles all measured. Manufacture follows those figures rather than a stock size. Installation covers post holes, footings, hanging, automation and testing. All our gates are 100% New Zealand made and installed, with a comprehensive warranty and a full after-sales service behind them.

A double leaf sized for a stock truck is not something that comes off a shelf, which is why we make what we install instead of ordering it in, and it is where the cost saving in going through us actually sits. Sydney Chappell founded Group One New Zealand in 2026, and it is a small team. As the company puts it: “Although Group 1 Line Marking has just started here in New Zealand, as a group we have been operating in Australia for almost 25 years.” The rest of the range is on our page.
Before anything else, stand at the road and watch your longest vehicle come in. If it cannot get clear of the seal before the gate finishes opening, the posts need to move back, and that is a decision far cheaper to make now than after the concrete has gone in.

For a wide rural opening, usually yes: steel and aluminium hold the span with less movement. Timber has the advantage on a township frontage where it can be matched to the house.
Yes. Farm and lifestyle properties often have a house entrance and a working entrance with different requirements, and they get specified separately.
