Gate access systems are the hardware that moves a gate and decides who is allowed through it. That covers the operator on the gate itself, the keypad or intercom at the entrance, the remotes in people’s cars, the locks that hold the leaf shut, and the loop or sensor that lets a vehicle out without touching anything. They go on residential driveways, apartment and body-corporate entrances, yards and depots, farm entrances, staff car parks and gated commercial sites. Most enquiries come from someone who already has a gate and wants it to work better, which is the job this page is mostly about.
The phrase itself is slippery. Several firms across the country trade under names close to it, so the words turn up as a business name as well as a product category. Used as a category, it describes two connected but separate things. The first is the operator: the motor, arm, ram or rack that physically moves the leaf. The second is access control: the keypad, intercom, reader, remote or app that decides when it moves and for whom. A gate can have one without the other, and most problems people describe turn out to sit clearly on one side of that line.
Group 1 is more than just a gate supply and install service. We also have available a range of parts, hardware, access controllers, remote locks and anything to do with customisation and the automation of pre-existing gates. That is the point of this part of the business: your gate does not have to have come from us for us to work on it.
Sydney Chappell founded Group One New Zealand in 2026, and the base is Unit 1, 37 Foremans Road, Islington, Christchurch 8042. We are a small team, so you know you’ll get the very best, and everyone in our team has a vast amount of industry experience behind them to apply to each project undertaken. We guarantee all the work we do, and gates built by our team also carry a comprehensive warranty and a full after-sales service. Crews cover Amberley in the north through to Timaru in the south, and west towards the Canterbury foothills.

The right method depends on who uses the gate and how often, not on what is newest.
Most sites end up with two or three of these together: remotes for the household or the staff, a keypad or intercom for everyone else, and free exit on the way out.
A retrofit is a different job from a new build, and it starts with the gate rather than the motor. Three things decide whether it will work well:
Where the gate is sound, adding an operator, safety devices and access hardware is usually a single visit. Where it is not, we will say so, because a motor on a tired gate becomes a service call every few months. Our range of safety devices and alternative opening methods allows us to have automatic gates on sloped ground as well as flat level, and for a heavier leaf we can also provide larger commercial motors.
Pedestrian and side gates are worth doing at the same time. A vehicle gate on a keypad and a side gate on an ordinary latch leaves the entrance only half controlled, and matching hardware across both is cheaper as one visit than as two.

Design comes first even on a retrofit. We’ll come out and take a look at the site and discuss ideas with you about the best solution for your situation, which here means checking the gate, the posts, the fall of the driveway, the power situation and how the entrance is actually used through a week.
Manufacture is the workshop part people do not expect on an access job. Mounting brackets, post adaptations, lock housings and pedestals frequently have to be made to suit a gate that was never designed for hardware, and making them properly is what stops an operator tearing itself off a post.
Installation is the fitting, the wiring, the safety devices and the setup, finishing with the part that matters most: showing whoever uses the gate how to work the manual release, add or delete a user, and get in when the power is off.
Systems age unevenly. The gate outlives the electronics, remotes get discontinued, or a new tenant needs their own access. Replacing a controller, adding a keypad to a remote-only gate, fitting an electric lock, changing over safety beams or expanding the number of users are all normal work rather than a rebuild.
Pricing is on quote, and on this work the site drives the number more than the product list does. What it follows: the type and weight of the gate, whether an operator is being added or replaced, how power is reaching the gate, the access methods you want and how many users they have to carry, the cabling run, and what has to be done to the gate or posts before the hardware goes on.

Most access hardware is fitted to an automatic gate, and that work is set out town by town:
It saves a visit if you can tell us four things: what kind of gate it is and roughly how heavy, whether there is an operator on it now and what brand is on the cover, how far the gate is from mains power, and how many people need to get through it. With those four, most of the conversation can happen before anyone drives out, and the site visit then confirms rather than discovers.
