    Industrial Gates Rangiora

If your yard already has a gate, the useful question is not which new one to buy. Group One New Zealand works on industrial gates in Rangiora from both ends: automating, re-controlling and re-fitting what is already on the boundary, and building a new gate when the old one has genuinely finished. Sydney Chappell founded the New Zealand company in 2026, and crews travel up from a base on Foremans Road in Islington, Christchurch, about half an hour down the road. Tell us what is on your entrance now and what it is failing to do, and we will come and look at it.

Start with what is already on the boundary

Most of the calls we would expect from a North Canterbury trade yard fall into one of five jobs, and none of them requires a new gate:

    • Automating a gate that is opened by hand, with the motor sized to the leaf
    • Replacing worn hardware: hinges, rollers, a track that has flattened out, fixings that have given up
    • Adding access control, so staff, contractors and freight are not all working off one shared remote
    • Fitting safety devices and a sensible alternative opening method for when the power is out
    • Fixing the traffic layout around the gate, which is usually the actual cause of the damage to it

We hold parts, hardware, access controllers, remote locks and everything to do with customisation and the automation of pre-existing gates, so none of that depends on us having built the gate in the first place.

Yards that are busier than they were built to be

There were 7,458 businesses across Waimakariri in 2025, and the District Plan has unlocked land for up to 17,000 new houses across Rangiora, Kaiapoi, Woodend and Oxford. Contractor, transport and trade yards feel that before anyone else does, because the plant that services all of it has to get in and out of somewhere.

Entrances that were fine for four movements a day behave differently at twenty. Gates get left open because working them is slow, posts get clipped because the turn is tighter than it used to be, and a manual gate quietly stops being a security measure at all. That is usually the point at which someone rings.

Getting a look at your yard

Phone us on 027 424 0600 or email info@groupone.co.nz, 7am to 3pm Monday to Friday.

Three things shape the first useful answer: the clear opening width, what the gate is managing to do at the moment and what it is not, and roughly how many vehicles a day pass through. On a trade yard that has quietly grown busier than it was laid out for, that third number usually explains the other two.

After that it wants a look rather than a diagnosis down the phone. Sites that are cramped, oddly shaped, awkward to get a truck into, or where an owner already knows exactly what they want are the ones where a visit saves the most, not the least.

Wind is a specification question, not a styling one

Environment Canterbury projects that inland areas north and west of Rangiora become 15 to 25% windier in winter and spring by 2090, on top of a region whose strongest winds already blow from the north-west.

That has a direct bearing on gate type. A wide swing leaf with solid infill presents a large flat area to a gale, and everything it does under that load goes through the hinges and the posts. A sliding gate or a cantilever puts the same span into a form that travels sideways rather than pivoting into the wind, and an open or slatted infill lets air through instead of catching it. If you want screening on an exposed frontage, that is a conversation about where the solid panels go, not a reason to abandon the idea.

    When replacing beats repairing

Sometimes the honest answer is that the gate has had its run. Bent frames, posts that have moved, a track that no longer sits true across the opening: those are the cases where money spent on a motor is money spent twice.

New gates come as sliding, cantilever, swing and bi-fold leaves, and our range of materials covers wood, steel, aluminium and stainless steel. A slider needs run-back for the full length of the leaf inside your own boundary. A cantilever keeps clear of the ground entirely. A swing needs room inside to open into, and a bi-fold folds back where there is none. We can provide larger commercial motors for heavier leaves, our gates are solar powered as well, which saves you energy costs, and our range of safety devices and alternative opening methods allows us to have automatic gates on sloped ground as well as flat-level.

    Highly Recommend Group 1 Linemarking!

We recently hired Group 1 Linemarking for a few of our residential strata projects, and the results exceeded our expectations. The team was punctual, professional, and clearly experienced. The line marking was crisp, precise, and done exactly to spec. Communication throughout the process was smooth, and they were flexible with scheduling, which made things a lot easier on our end. If you need reliable, high-quality line marking services, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Group 1. Great job!

What is happening around the gate

Gates rarely fail on their own. They get hit, or they get propped open because the alternative slows the yard down too much.

Group One New Zealand does line marking, bollards, wheel stops, speed humps, convex safety mirrors and safety fencing as well as gates, so the layout is part of the same job. Marking the vehicle route through the gateway and keeping the pedestrian path off it, setting bollards or wheel stops where reversing trailers reach the posts, the motor and the control pedestal, putting a convex mirror on a blind exit, and slowing traffic on the internal roadway all cost less than repairing the gate a second time.

Boundaries, neighbours and Waimakariri District Council

Boundary work brings the Fencing Act 1978 into it. Where a fence line is shared with a neighbouring owner, a Fencing Notice has to be served and the neighbour given 21 days to respond before work starts. On an industrial frontage that is worth starting early, because 21 days is longer than most people allow for.

Waimakariri District Council becomes involved only where a fence needs a building or resource consent, or where it adjoins Council land, and it notes that a resource consent is likely for any fence on the road boundary or an internal boundary. Nationally, no building consent is required for fences or hoardings up to 2.5 metres. Confirm your own position with the Council and we will work to it.

What the quote is built from

Pricing is on quote. What moves it:

    • Whether this is automation added to an existing gate or a new gate entirely
    • Clear opening width, and the weight of the leaf spanning it
    • Sliding, cantilever, swing or bi-fold, and the space each needs at that opening
    • Motor size for the leaf, and how hard the entrance is worked
    • Access control, and how many users need to be issued
    • The condition of the posts, footings and ground at the entrance
    • Power at the gate, or solar

Group One New Zealand, the short version

Sydney Chappell founded Group One New Zealand in 2026, and we are a small team, so you know you’ll get the very best. In the company’s own words: “Although Group 1 Line Marking has just started here in New Zealand, as a group we have been operating in Australia for almost 25 years.” The marking half of that name is not incidental on a busy trade yard, because what wears a gate out is usually the traffic moving around it: the people who hang the leaf are the people who set out the route past it, the wheel stops beside it and the fencing running either way from it. All gates constructed by our team come with a comprehensive warranty and are backed by a full after-sales service. The full range sits on our page. NZBN 9429053752833.

Tell us what is on the entrance now

The fastest way to a useful answer is a description of what you have. The type of gate, roughly how wide the opening is, whether there is a motor and what brand is on it, how it is opened today, and a photograph or two of the posts and the track. Send that with the site address and we will tell you whether you are looking at a service call, an upgrade or a replacement before anybody drives up the road. Group One New Zealand, Unit 1, 37 Foremans Road, Islington, Christchurch 8042.

    What Rangiora sites ask

Will you work on a gate somebody else installed?

Yes. Most of the retrofit and hardware work we do is on gates we did not build.

Our motor still runs but the gate judders across the opening.

That is usually the track, the rollers or the ground under them rather than the motor. Worth looking at before the motor gets blamed and replaced.

Can we add a keypad without changing anything else?

Often, yes. It depends on the controller that is there, which is a two-minute check on site.

How exposed is too exposed for a swing gate?

There is no single line, and it depends on width, infill and which way the frontage faces. That is exactly the judgment the site visit is for.
