Group One New Zealand builds and installs industrial gates for sites in and around Darfield, Selwyn District, and automates the gates already sitting on those entrances. Sydney Chappell founded the New Zealand company in 2026. Crews travel the 35 km west from a base on Foremans Road in Islington, Christchurch, which puts a Malvern job comfortably inside a working day. If you already know what you want, say so and we will price it. If you would rather show us the entrance, that is the better start.
The short version, so you know whether we are the right call:
All our gates are 100% New Zealand made and installed, and because we manufacture and install them ourselves, there are significant savings to be made.

Darfield is a rural service town of about 3,590 people built around the arable and pastoral country of the Malvern district and Fonterra’s $500 million milk processing plant. Through the season, entrances out here work in a way a suburban gate never does: heavy vehicles arriving through the night, drivers who cannot leave the cab, and a gate that cycles hundreds of times before anybody has had lunch.
Cycle rate is what sizes the motor, not just leaf weight. A unit that is comfortable on a dozen openings a day is being asked for something else entirely at ten times that, and it will tell you so in its second winter. We fit larger commercial motors where the duty calls for one, and we go through the same three questions on every high-traffic entrance: how fast it has to open, what it does when the power drops, and what happens to a truck already queued on the road while it sorts itself out. That last one is the reason gate position gets set back off the carriageway wherever there is room to do it.
Weather has a say too. This is the township under the nor’west arch, sitting at about 193 metres on the plains, and a Foehn nor’wester can lift the temperature several degrees an hour before a cold southerly comes through off the Southern Ocean a day later. Steel moves through that range. Clearances at the track and the hinges get set with the swing in mind, and a wide solid leaf gives that wind a great deal to push on.

Worth having ready before the drive west: the clear opening width, the largest vehicle that comes through, roughly how many movements a day the entrance genuinely sees, and whether power reaches the gate or the nearest cable is a paddock away. The movements figure is the one that shifts the specification most out here, so a rough count taken on a working day is worth far more than an impression formed on a quiet one.
We’ll come out and take a look at the site and discuss ideas with you about the best solution for your situation.
A gate on a rural commercial site is one part of a vehicle layout that also has to handle a unit turning inside the yard without clipping anything.
That means the swept path matters as much as the opening width. A gate wide enough to drive through is not automatically wide enough to turn through, and the difference shows up as scraped posts and a bent control pedestal. We mark the vehicle route through the gateway, keep the pedestrian path clear of it, put bollards or wheel stops where reversing traffic meets the posts and the motor, and fit a convex safety mirror where a driver pulling out onto a rural road cannot see far enough along it. Safety fencing carries the line on from the gate where the boundary needs it.
Plenty of Darfield sites do not need a new gate at all. If the posts are sound and the leaf is straight, adding a motor, safety devices, a controller and a proper opening method to what is there is the cheaper answer, and we carry the parts, hardware, access controllers and remote locks to do it. Where a manual gate is being propped open through the season because nobody has time to work it, that is exactly the job automation was invented for.

Selwyn District Council states that any fence more than 2 metres tall will require a building consent and may require a resource consent, and that fences or walls higher than 2.5 metres need building consent. The Selwyn District Plan also carries urban fencing rules, 4.13 and 4.17, which deal with height and with visibility.
Visibility is the one worth thinking about at a gateway. A solid gate and a solid fence right up to the road boundary take away the view a driver needs before pulling out, and an open or partly open infill near the entrance often solves that better than a mirror alone. The Council also notes that construction and maintenance of boundary fences is generally governed by the Fencing Act and sits outside its jurisdiction. Confirm your own position with the Council and we will design to it.

An entrance worked this hard is judged in its second season rather than its first week, so what happens after the install matters as much as the install. All gates constructed by our team come with a comprehensive warranty and are backed by a full after-sales service, and adjustment on a high-cycle gateway is exactly what that is for. Sydney Chappell founded Group One New Zealand in 2026, and we are a small team, so you know you’ll get the very best. In the company’s own words: “Although Group 1 Line Marking has just started here in New Zealand, as a group we have been operating in Australia for almost 25 years.” The crew that comes back to tune a motor can lift a faded turning path or reset a knocked bollard while it is on site. The worst week to discover a gate motor is undersized is the week the entrance is busiest. If your site has a season, the work wants to happen either side of it: measure and quote while things are quiet, install before the traffic builds, and keep the after-sales service for adjustments rather than emergencies. Tell us roughly when your quiet months fall and we will fit the visit into them. Group One New Zealand, Unit 1, 37 Foremans Road, Islington, Christchurch 8042.
Call 027 424 0600 to Request a Free QuoteIt depends on the setup, and it is a decision rather than an accident. We go through the options for opening it manually and for what the gate does by default before the motor is specified.
Yes. Our gates are solar powered as well, which saves you energy costs and takes a trench out of the job.
Sometimes. It depends on the posts, the fence line and what is behind them, which is a look rather than a phone answer.
