The driveway went in with the house, and nobody put a conduit under it. That is where a good share of the driveway gates we build for Rolleston start, on a section where most of the town’s housing went up between 2010 and 2019 and the gate is the last thing added to a frontage that has been open since handover. What a new-subdivision frontage does to the gate choice
Sections in Acland Park, Faringdon and the newer streets around them tend to give you a level entrance, a fresh concrete crossing and a fence line that is either brand new or not there yet. It also means the driveway was laid to a design that never accounted for a gate, so the first job is working out what the space will carry.
Start with the opening span, then the vehicles: a second car, a ute with a trailer behind it, a campervan, a boat, or a horse float if you are on the rural edge. Those set the clear width.
- A single swing leaf across a wide opening gets heavy fast, and it needs the full width of clear arc inside the property before it will open.
- A double swing pair splits that load and that arc in two. It is the usual answer where the driveway widens inside the boundary and there is room either side.
- A sliding gate needs no arc at all, but it does need a run of clear ground alongside the driveway, roughly the length of the opening again, plus a level track to run on.
Swing direction is a decision in its own right. Gates should open inward, off the footpath and the road, which means the ground just inside the gate has to be flat enough to take the leaf through its whole travel. On the handful of Rolleston sections where the driveway climbs away from the street, that is where a slider earns its place.

Getting power to the gate after the driveway is poured
Automation is straightforward on a new build and slightly more interesting on a finished one, because the cable has to reach the post.
Solar power is the usual way around a driveway you would rather not cut. A solar-powered motor runs its own supply at the gate, which saves the trenching and the ongoing energy cost, and it suits an entrance set well back from the house. Where mains power is close, or the gate will cycle many times a day, a wired supply is the stronger option.
For opening it, you have a remote, a keypad on a pedestal, a Bluetooth or mobile connection, or a SIM-based controller that lets you open the gate for a courier or a tradesperson while you are at work. Safety devices and alternative opening methods let an automatic gate work on sloped ground as well as flat-level ground. Motor size follows leaf weight and how often the gate is used, so a lighter aluminium leaf will often let you use a smaller motor than a steel one of the same span.

Selwyn District Council, and the Rolleston overlays
Selwyn District Council advises that any fence more than 2 metres tall will require a building consent and may require a resource consent, and building consent is specifically required for fences or walls higher than 2.5 metres, and for all swimming pools and their associated fences. A pool or spa barrier is never covered by a general fencing exemption.
Rolleston carries something extra. The Council’s Fencing Guide notes that in Living Z areas and in the Lowes Road ODP area, specific fencing rules apply to the sides of properties facing either road or reserve boundaries. A driveway gate sits on the road boundary by definition, so those rules land on it directly, and a section backing onto a reserve can be caught twice. Subdivision covenants are a separate matter again: they are a private agreement, not a council rule, and they often have more to say about what your frontage may look like than the district plan does.
On a shared boundary, the Fencing Act 1978 governs what you and your neighbour each owe. Confirm the current requirements with Selwyn District Council before work starts, and check your covenants at the same time.
Materials for hot nor’westers and hard frosts
Our range of materials covers wood, steel, aluminium and stainless steel. Inland Selwyn gets the summer extremes when hot dry north-westerly winds come over the Alps and down onto the plains, and winters bring frequent overnight frosts, so a Rolleston gate is asked to move in both.
Wind is a leaf-area problem. A solid gate across a wide opening hands serious load to the posts and hinges every time the nor’wester gets up, which is why post size and footing depth are set against the leaf they carry. Slatted or spaced infill lets the wind through instead. Steel takes a wide span without flexing and should be hot-dip galvanised before powder-coating, so the coating protects the inside of the sections too. Aluminium is light and low-maintenance, timber suits a house that is already timber-clad, and stainless steel goes into the fittings that have to keep their finish. Frost matters at ground level: footings go deep enough to sit below the movement, and the clearance under the gate is set so a heaved surface still lets it swing.

The gate is then made to those numbers rather than trimmed to fit from a stock size, which is the difference that shows up in the gaps at each end. Pricing a gate onto a finished frontage
Pricing is on quote. A newer Selwyn section puts you ahead on some of the inputs and behind on others, and it is worth knowing which is which before the quote lands.
In your favour. The entrance is usually level, the vehicle crossing is sound and nobody has to guess what the post holes are going into, so ground fall and footings seldom turn into a project of their own.
Working against you. The concrete is already down. Getting a supply to the gate then means either solar with a battery sized to the cycle count, or a cable route that goes around rather than through the driveway, and that single decision is a genuine share of the number.
Everything else follows the usual path: opening span and whether it is one leaf, two or a slider; gate style, infill and the weight that results; material and finish, with galvanising under the powder coat; the automation, access hardware and safety devices; and travel to your address.

Wooden or metal for a newer house?
Both work. Timber reads warmer against a modern build and wants a frame that keeps it square; steel and aluminium hold a wider span with less movement and less upkeep.
Can I just buy a gate off the shelf?
You can, if your opening happens to match a stock width. Where it does not, the mismatch shows up in the gaps, the post spacing and a motor working against a leaf it was not sized for.
Do I need consent for a 1.8 metre gate?
Under Selwyn’s stated height thresholds a gate at that height is below the building consent trigger, but the Rolleston overlays and your covenants can still apply. Check both with the Council before you commit to a design.
