    Automatic Gates Rolleston

Count the vehicles that will cross your entrance on a normal day. That number decides more about the specification than the style does, because a gate opening six times a day and a gate opening sixty are not the same machine. Group One New Zealand designs, manufactures and installs automatic gates for Rolleston properties, from new subdivision frontages to yards in the iZONE Southern Business Hub, with crews travelling out from the Islington base in Christchurch. Phone us on 027 424 0600, 7am to 3pm Monday to Friday, and we will come out, look at the entrance and give you a written quote.

Duty cycle: the number the motor is chosen from

Rolleston puts two completely different briefs inside one town. A family home built in the last fifteen years, gate opening a handful of times a day, needs a drive that starts reliably from cold and sits idle the rest of the time. An iZONE yard with trucks and staff moving through it needs cycles per hour, a thermal duty rating that will not overheat by mid-afternoon, and hardware chosen for wear rather than finish.

Get that number wrong and the gate does not fail immediately. It fails in eighteen months, in the gearbox, the hinges or the rack.

    Automatic Gates Rolleston

Swing, slide, and what your entrance allows

The physical facts decide the rest:

    • Span, and whether the opening runs as a single leaf or a double
    • Leaf weight, balance and frame rigidity
    • Track run and side room for a sliding gate, sweep clearance for a swing gate
    • Driveway fall and the surface the gate crosses
    • Where the gate sits relative to the road boundary

Rack-driven sliders carry long spans and high cycle counts better than anything that swings. Articulated arm drives handle wide pillars and awkward hinge points. Ram drives suit lighter, well balanced leaves, and underground drives keep the hardware out of sight. The leaf and the drive are specified together in every case, because leaf weight and wind area set the motor class.

Power on a section where the concrete is already down

On a new Rolleston section, the driveway, the vehicle crossing and the services went in before anyone thought about a gate. Running mains power to the gate line then means trenching across a finished crossing and making good afterwards, which is often the single biggest surprise in the quote.

That is exactly where solar earns its place. Solar operation is a standard part of what we build, sized against the cycle count rather than a nominal panel rating, with battery capacity to carry the gate through a run of grey winter days. Battery backup on a mains installation does the same job for outages. Either way, every gate we install has a manual release that opens it by hand without tools, and standby draw is the figure we size the panel and battery from, not the opening draw.

Controls for a household, and for a site with staff

Remote handsets and a keypad cover most family entrances. A gate out of sight of the house wants an intercom, which needs cable back to the building unless it runs over a mobile connection. Bluetooth and mobile phone access suit a fixed group of regular users.

Commercial sites usually need more than that: SIM-based remote access so someone off site can let a delivery in, temporary or delegated access for contractors and relief drivers, and free-exit detection so vehicles leave without touching anything. Anything using a mobile connection needs a usable signal at the gate, which we check while we are there.

Safety, sloped ground and gates that already exist

Obstruction detection and force limiting come as standard, with photocells across the opening, a safety edge where the leaf leads, warning lights on a busy commercial entrance, a separate pedestrian route and vehicle detection loops where traffic could back onto the road.

Ground that falls across the opening is a design question, not a reason to decline the job, and the same goes for cramped, irregular or hard-to-reach entrances. If you already have a gate hung on good posts, we can often automate it instead of replacing it, using parts, hardware, access controllers and remote locks fitted to what is there. We will say plainly if the leaf is not rigid enough to be driven.

    Highly Recommend Group 1 Linemarking!

We recently hired Group 1 Linemarking for a few of our residential strata projects, and the results exceeded our expectations. The team was punctual, professional, and clearly experienced. The line marking was crisp, precise, and done exactly to spec. Communication throughout the process was smooth, and they were flexible with scheduling, which made things a lot easier on our end. If you need reliable, high-quality line marking services, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Group 1. Great job!

The gate is made here, not bought in

Design, manufacture and installation are all done by our own team, with consultation running through all three. We fabricate in timber, steel, aluminium and stainless steel, hot-dip galvanised and powder coated where the material needs it, with post and footing depths set by the leaf weight rather than by the fence line beside it. Inland plains conditions get factored in: hot dry north-westerlies off the Alps through summer, frequent overnight frosts through winter, both of which work on grease, seals and alignment. All our gates are 100% New Zealand made and installed, and every one carries a comprehensive warranty and full after-sales service.

Selwyn District Council, Living Z and Lowes Road

Selwyn District Council advises that any fence more than 2 metres tall will require a building consent and may require a resource consent, and building consent is specifically required for fences or walls higher than 2.5 metres. Swimming pools and their associated fences sit outside any exemption and have their own consent requirement.

Rolleston carries an extra layer. The Council’s Fencing Guide notes that in Living Z areas and the Lowes Road ODP area, specific fencing rules apply to the sides of properties facing road or reserve boundaries. An automatic gate sits on the road boundary by definition, so that is the rule most likely to affect what you can build. Shared boundaries with neighbours also carry obligations under the Fencing Act 1978. Confirm current requirements with Selwyn District Council before work starts.

    What moves the quote

Pricing is on quote. The figure comes from the span and leaf weight, the material and finish, the ground fall and surface, the drive type and the duty cycle it has to hold, whether power runs from the mains or from solar, the access control hardware, the safety devices, how difficult the site is and the travel to it.

Group One New Zealand, and what a hard-working gate is made of

A gate that opens forty times a day is a fabrication brief before it is a motor brief. Frame section, weld detail, hinge or roller size and the post carrying the whole load all get chosen for the cycle count, and we get to choose them because we make the gate instead of fitting one in. Sydney Chappell founded Group One New Zealand in 2026, it is a small team, and work leaves Islington in Christchurch finished for the short run south-west into Selwyn. That covers both briefs this town produces: an iZONE yard entrance that never stops, and a subdivision frontage where the concrete crossing went down long before anyone thought about power at the gate. Selwyn’s rules for what faces a road or reserve boundary are read at the drawing stage. On the group’s longer record, in its own words: “Although Group 1 Line Marking has just started here in New Zealand, as a group we have been operating in Australia for almost 25 years.” See our page.

    Tell us the cycle count

The one number we cannot work out for you is how hard the gate will be worked. How many vehicles, how often, and whether anyone will be waiting at the entrance while it opens: those answers are yours, and they set the motor class, the hardware and the warranty conditions. Bring them to the site visit and the rest of the specification follows.

    Questions we get asked

Are sliding or swing gates cheaper?

Neither is reliably cheaper. A swing pair on a level, wide entrance is often the simpler build, while a slider avoids the civil work a steep or short driveway would need. The site usually decides it before cost does.

How much does an automatic gate cost?

It is quoted per site, in New Zealand dollars. Span, leaf weight, material, ground conditions, drive type, duty cycle, power supply and access hardware all move it.

Does an electric gate use a lot of electricity?

No. The motor only draws power while the gate is moving. Standby draw is the consumption that matters over a year, and it is small enough that solar handles a typical residential gate outright.

What is the cheapest gate to install?

The cheapest gate to install is rarely the cheapest gate to own. A leaf that is light enough to be cheap is often too flexible to hold alignment under a drive, and the cost comes back as call-outs.
